I admit that I am new to this whole motorcycling thing, but I still don't understand the ENORMOUS fairing on the front of the HD. What is up with that? What is it there for? Is it supposed to be a bike-mounted chin bar or something? How do you see over it?

Sorry, just it looks like the guy is driving a washing machine or something.

make fun of that big faring if you want, but it works very well at keeping bugs, rain and the winter wind off the rider AND passenger.
It is a big heavy bike so the handling is not affected that much.

I briefly lost my mind a few years ago and bought an '09 street glide which had that same fairing. (I had to see why all these people live and breathe Harley's.) Anyway, that batshit fairing induced so much buffeting that i sold the bike. No kidding. And I never did figure out what the allure of a Harley is. Big, heavy, ill-handling things.

My wife just had to have a fairing and windshield on her Ural. When I first rode it, it was winter. I wasn't getting any fresh air past that thing, but I didn't mind so much in the cold. As soon as spring hit and the temps started creeping up into the 80's, I began to loathe that big fairing. Nothing but hot nasty fumes in my face at all times. I was sweating my face off, even with an open face helmet. I found myself frequently standing on the pegs just to get clean air.

Fairings and windshields are a science. Bigger is not necessarily better, and there is a lot of work that SHOULD go into designing them. But not every company tests their stuff in a wind tunnel, or even on the road. A proper fairing/windshield should not create turbulence, and should leave a stream of clean air at the riders head. My Husky accomplishes this with no windshield at all. My Triumph has a small windshield that meets the mission. The Ural does not. About half the HDs I've spent time on had it right....for me. Put a 6'2" guy on there and you may get a different story. That big fairing might work great for the guy in the picture, but cause all sorts of problems for you.

My 2012 RT had an adjustable windshield, and incredible wind protection. I traded it in after a year. In the winter it was great, but I sweated my ass off in the summer, and found the whole "no wind" experience to be very disengaging of what riding is s about.

You can see hie whole body jerking back and forth as he modulates brakes and/or throttle really badly.

Why does this guy crash? Mis-shift causes rear wheel traction loss? Why does everyone crash in this same spot? I've never ridden there, sincere question.
