On second thought, maybe he is so used to his obese girlfriend riding on the back that he just doesn't know how to ride any other way.

I know the muffler on the 955 Sprint was adjustable in position to facilitate rear wheel change, and possibly to allow different saddlebags to fit. That position definitely looks like the lower position.
I thought of that when I first saw the original photo.
