I appreciate the fact that 99.99% of the boboheads that cross the line do so where there is no sightline.

I also appreciate the sentiment that if you can't ride it in your own lane, don't ride it, and if you need both lanes, you are going waaaaay too fast for a public road. I feel the same way.

Also, I'm willing to stipulate that on the dragon there may actually be very few places where I would say it was safe to cross the line like this guy.

But those folks that bring down the moral hammer for someone crossing the line where there is a good sightline and no oncoming traffic- why the fuck do you guys even have bikes?

I will also say that 'obeying' 99.9% of the laws out there- or not- has pretty much zero moral component to it.

I owe moral behaviors and actions to my fellow man, but absolutely none to the state, and you shouldn't either.

linky?

Can you show one pic, or one post where that is encouraged in A BLIND TURN?

remember, not all places, in all turns, across all double yellows, are blind. There are places where they're NOT blind, but if you look through or across, can see VERY well...

Helmets are engineered to have as little as possible blindspots... der... As labor intensive as it may be, just turn your fucking head and look!

Can't see? Then don't violate it! It's as simple as that!

Every corner is a blind corner when someone's got their head up their ass.

Yeah, but only 47% of people know that.

When they have ridden a long way to get to [Sarcasm]"the gap"[/Sarcasm] most riders instantly become part of the problem. After all, isn't that why they went in the first place.

I went there once just to see what all the fuss was about. I left underwhelmed and disappointed at the things I saw. No desire to go back.
Good points.

I used to ride deals gap quite a bit. It is a great road. Then the T shirt vendors got everyone to start calling it "the Dragon". Now people can go there, ride it, and go back to kansas (or wherever) and brag to their friends that they "slew the Dragon". I almost never go there anymore. When I do it is to meet interesting riders from all over, not for the ride. There are much more challenging roads in the area with much tighter curves. Most of those roads have much less traffic. All twisty mountain roads are dangerous because there is always the possibility that someone else (or a deer) will do something stupid and take you out. I accept the risk because I enjoy riding and there is some risk in everything. I rarely ride Deals Gap because it is usuelly clogged with slow moving traffic and is a boring ride at 25 MPH.

Deals Gap does have one good point. It attracts many of the tourists and leaves the other roads with less traffic.

While I'm on the subject of "Dragon" hype. Here is a direct quote from a brochure I picked up at the Cherohala Skyway visitors center. It is published by Tail of the Dragon.com

"Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap is America's favorite two-lane tourist road. There's no other road even close to matching the challenge of 318 curves in 11 miles of desolate Smoky Mountain asphalt."

Far too many riders buy into this hype and then go without having any twisty road riding experience. When I ride there I worry much more about the riders lacking in riding skills than I do about fast riders who occasionally pass across the double yellow.

I'm guessing that there are people making comments who have little experience on curvy roads, or maybe they are just slow riders who have never passed other slow riders.

It is possible that Mr Tapout was making a boneheaded move, but my guess is that he was passing the other rider. Whether it was safe or not is impossible to tell from the pic. It would depend on how fast the riders being passed was going as wel as the passers sight distance.

Start at page one and keep reading...this topic is repeated and repeated and repeated and repeated for (currently) 183 pages.

So what do you "Stay on your own side of the line" types make of this one:

Hint: I KNOW what the sight-lines were like because I took the photo.

Makes me want to go back and tour England and the IOM again.

I'd love to do the same in NZ.

Dashed white line, looks like a legal passing zone. Or maybe it's New Zealand.
