On the outside of the bend, just before the rider himself comes into view

my two cents? On a narrow road like that one, if you come up on a bike parked on the side of the road, you KNOW something is going on. You should just slow down to be on the safe side. If he slowed down when he saw the bike parked, nothing would have happened.

If he had only been equipped with ABS, DTC, and that new "Proximity Sensing De-Moleculizer Beam" thingy that BMW is coming out with... well, you know.

Also, looked like he was passing the other bikes very unsafely, and barely in control to start with!

However, none of us were there to see the big picture, so who knows?

Exactly. Riding too fast. I'd beat the snot out of that idiot if I were the guy run down, assuming I was able. Do a goddamned track day and stop that shit on public roads. WTF?

Sorry - in a mood.

at 49 seconds, the bike can be seen in the crappy video from the 3rd bike. so from where that guy was passing he had an even better angle to see the bike well before the turn. I bet he is still thinking to this day, if only I did not pass on that blind corner...

I wouldn't count on it.

On the serious side, I would not be surprised if the rider in question places all blame on everything but himself. This does seem to be the prevailing thought process in this country as of late. The caption in the beginning of the video shows that the poster is placing blame fully upon the guy picking up his gloves.

Just like a damn squirrel. Not so easy to cross the road is it?

Like it or not, this is true. Kids, dogs, deer, road workers, broken down trucks, fallen trees, bales of hay, farm tractors: there's all kinds of stuff in/on the roadway. If you run into it, you're riding beyond what you can see. Staying alive on a bike shouldn't be a matter of luck.

(I'm the same as most riders. I try to ride smart, but I've been lucky before, too.)

You might be in a bad mood, but, imho, you got the right answer.

I enjoy Deal's Gap, but I don't ride at 10/10ths pace there. It just makes a lot of sense to have some reserves to deal with the surprises. On my last trip out there a couple of months ago, my surprise was two wild baby hogs....

You'd think the guy in the road would have heard the bikes coming in enough time to GTF out of the way..

Shit like this is why riders like this SHOULD be hammered by the authorities.

Because the guy with the gloves was probably headed left, crossing to the side of the road where he parked his bike when the SUMO came around the bend. The SUMO rider headed to the right which would have been behind the pedestrian. Then pedestrian then changed his mind and headed toward the right shoulder and got tagged. I think that's why the SUMO rider stayed inside instead of going wide after hitting the apex.

Watch the video in High Def. Still Sumo was riding like a douche, but...

I think it was a classic case of a person 2nd guessing their decision, and running or walking into the path of the thing with the largest amount of momentum...

This happens all the time. For me in traffic, and in racing.

"The rule is, you go straight for them..."

That's b/c that's the one place they shouldn't be by the time you get there. I open the gap of a car crossing my path, by aiming at where they are when I first see them. That way, they get a wider berth as I go past them.

The guy retrieving his gloves from the middle of the road possibly was about to cross it, changed his mind and did the opposite after Supermoto guy dedicated his line.

They do stop and turn amazingly quick, but not that quick...

IMO, the same thing could have happened if the guy was doing 20... The SM rider COULD have blead off that much speed BEFORE the impact, but the vid won't show that.

So speed here is irrelevant. Unless you can prove his speed on impact. Or, you can ask the 1st one up after getting hit with a 300lb motorcycle, he might know...
