Enjoy that soul-less box. I just saw a new Malibu today at work and thought the very same thing. Neither is something to look at - both are just tools to use / devices to hold motors and drive-trains.

i see two cars, both only so-so looking. while the modern iteration doesn't look yust like the early one, anyone that cannot tell what it was modeled after, is blind. but at least the newer one isn't a complete pos to drive...

The only reason I can think of is that people want to see the new one styled after the old one. From a practical standpoint, I just don't see it.

Americans are so easily fooled these days, so I understand the associations some may be attributing toward it.

No, I'm saying I see so few styling cues loaded onto a car that otherwise would not be ever considered a Camaro without advertising and a name plate being attached that I'm at a loss for seeing a Camaro - period.

And you must believe GM spent hundreds of millions of dollars to make a modern version of the Camaro, advertised it as the modern version of the old muscle car, puts it side-by-side in showrooms with the old version, but never intended anyone to think they look anything alike.

Is it an exact copy? Of course not. Is it clearly an homage to the old design? You'd have to be blind not to think so.

the first time i ever saw one, i knew immediately it was a camaro, even before i saw any name or anything. its styling has camaro written all over it...

I have an ax on my truck. You know what? It's been used quite a lot, I have the calluses to prove it. I bought it to smash mesquite into oblivion on trails, that shit makes a hell of a noise when it hits paint. Now I try to avoid the stuff whenever possible, but sometimes it's too thick to even mow down. I'm not adding a chainsaw to all the other crap I already carry.
