You're close! It was in "Superfly", and other movies.

Quote from the above article.

[...]white customization shop owners often refused to work on the cars of affluent black clientele, particularly when the source of their income was suspect. Les Dunham, owner of Dunham Coach, had no such reservations[...]

"Yes sir, just place that large briefcase of money over there."
""Excuse me, sir, but I believe you've left a bag of... laundry detergent... in the trunk."

I have never seen wire wheels fashioned like that before.

I think you mean "Live and Let Die".

Some of the modern Donks I've seen make those old pimp mobiles look Barrett Jackson worthy.

After seeing some of the stuff sold at Barrett Jackson (especially early in the day, early in the week, not shown on TV), you are not setting the bar very high. I have seen hail totaled (not just damaged, but total loss vehicles) roll through the line. Watch them get these things running to move into the auction line they bring along a BIG jump box and a can of ether and are not afraid to use it.

It was probably a nice car at one time. But was a heap when we got our hands on it.

A few cans of spray paint, a few items from around the house, and we got pulled over a few times

lots of detail here - soak it in

This is responsible for the first official time I had a gun pulled on me. 4 cruisers and 2 motorcycles collected us and drilled us for about an hour on what we were driving. We were all pulled out one at a time - at gunpoint . Some cops have no sense of humor.

Your story makes me feel lucky! I once cut the top off a 73 Chevy Malibu four door. I laughingly called it a "converted" rather than a convertible, since the top went down just once, and stayed down forever after.

I drove the thing around for several years, and the only time the police ever gave me trouble, it was simple curiosity: the officer walked up chuckling, and really just wanted to have a look at what I'd done. Thankfully, no guns involved! I suppose that car would fit well in this thread. Sadly, I have no photos of it.

What was their issue with it? Did they think it looked like a cop car? They'd have a shitfit if they rolled through here:

Someone locally made an LTD wagon topless. It's purple. I haven't seen it yet this year, but I expect to soon.

Nice car? Maybe when it was built...

The story on this thing is, my good friend inherited his folks' '77 Cutlass and he pretty much semi-restored it. This was back in the late 1980s. One part he couldn't find was a rear bumper to replace the rusted one on his car. I located this '76 POS abandoned on a used car lot, and he bought the entire thing for $150. No keys and no title. What to do with the rest of it? We managed to hotwire it, decorated it as shown (the busted hood scoop was a $5 swap meet find) and beat the snot out of it for a weekend in the woods. The trans finally gave out, we pushed it over a cliff and left it. Eventually it was set on fire, and a few weeks later an enterprising soul hauled it out for scrap. The same fate befell a few other cars that I don't have photos of, particularly a '76 Nova I picked up for $75 that is at the bottom of a strip mine lake now.

that's actually a C3 Corvette. They made a handful of these. I think one was in a James Bond movie and another in a Blacksploitation film I can't remember the name of.

They said the reason for the stop was some sort of equipment issue. I think they questioned the safety of the SS moover. That's what they told us anyway. What was actually going through their heads I have no idea.
