Recall.

Here is the deal. If this happens to 80% of the 990's and this was a new car there would be a recall. The fact that this is a adventure bike and we are in the most remote places in the world. This is unforgivable to who makes the decision at KTM. Car full pump don't go bad nor does the other manufactures. Don't tell me bad gas. This will or may have gotten some of us killed.

1,800 miles in mountains of Mexico. Wide open at 60 MPH dead. $1,500 no warranty in Mexico.

6,800 miles in Costa Rica. Wide open at 80 MPH dead. $500.00 3 weeks for parts. no warranty in Costa Rica.

This is the best bike for the adventure job! I just don't have room 2 carry full pumps.

Agreed, but I made room in my kit for a spare fuel pump. Sucks, but thats the way it is if you want to take this bike into remote areas.

I shoulda got a carbed 950.

Holy crap did I read that right? You are on your 3rd fuel pump at less than 10,000 miles?????

Yes it should be covered where ever you are. I was in Periferico, Mexico and the owner was coming in from the states. He was going to do me a big favor and bring it with him. I could not get a price up front but was hoping for warranty. After looking at my bike in a dirt parking lots for 5 days all apart I got the price. Special gringo price $600.00 plus labor. I took the bike out and fedex a pump in next day. $240.00 plus freight. I did the work.

If you ride full throttle you will replace the full pump. That is the only guaranty for the KTM 990 world wide.

I ride it like everyday is my last. 5 tires in 6,800 miles.

115 mph on dirt roads, no bike in this class. Just need to carry spare pumps. I love this bike.

But what I found most compelling was that when my Tech called KTM, they told him that there wasn't a fuel pump problem...in fact, he was nervous about replacing a $500+ fuel pump for nothing, etc...but I was a very convincing customer...used the F-word occasionally and broke shit...

Only afte he experienced a near deatth experience at rush hour on a busy six lane did he take me seriously.

A new fuel pump fixed all...and I watched him bench-test the old...perfect. Explain that KTM...still love the bike...but it looks to me like corporate is scrambling...but it could just be me.

I would suggest an answer for "some" of the failures. Let me know what ya think. The majority of the pump failures seem to have previousely been in remote areas, filled by jerry cans or questionable fuel sources. Dirty fuel equals clogged or dirty filters. The pump (like most pumps) will fail if intake flow is restricted. The pre filter thing might really be the answer.

Any one have failure that have ONLY filled at service stations???

My '08 only had 1400 mile on it, and all fill ups were premium gas at reputable gas stations (mostly Shell). All filters were clean when the mechanic pulled the pump.

My bike had 1,800 miles on it. U.S. to Mexico only name brand gas. My thoughts are it is the guys who hold in wide open. The fuel pump is just working to hard.

I did a 3,500kms trip, two up with luggage, out of which 1,800kms was done on straight roads/expressway at 140-160kmph constant speeds. Touchwood, haven't had any problems till date (3,000kms since then).

I think I'm a having the same problem (surging, sputtering, bogging, will stall after starting once in awhile). 07 990, 11k miles.

I pulled the pump last night and both filters were brown but showed NO resistance to fuel passage (Thanks Mr.Vicks for the great pics on this). Is there a good way to bench test the pump itself?

My dealer seems to think this could be related to tight valves. Any chance they would tighten up abruptly and cause the symptoms described in this thread?

I have 14,000 miles on my '07 990 and haven't had any fueling issues...starting to worry about the tranny though...

Experienced my first stalling issues with my new bike at 350 miles. The nearest LC8 dealer is over 150 miles away. I'm not sure if the local ones will be much help if I do decided to take the bike in.

My first stall occurred while I was taking off to cross an intersection. It felt like I was taking off in 2rd gear or something and the bike stalled just before I had the clutch all the way out (rolling at about 10 mph). I pulled the clutch in and hit the starter and it fired back up. I experienced this bogging sensation at the next couple of stops, but feathered the clutch out and gassed the bike a lot till I cleared the intersections. The problem mysteriously went away till the next day when it stalled after doing about 30 miles of Xway driving. I stopped at the top of the exit ramp and the bike stalled when I went to pull out into traffic. Not cool.

I'll post if I figure anything out.
