That was a hilarious story.
Here is my take on why the salute is a good thing: It helps remind you to control rage while riding. Even if you knew what you were doing when you placed the sticker, your first reaction to the salute is probably a brief moment of anger. After a few false reactions, a rider will learn to control that. After that, encountering a genuinely angry person becomes easier to deal with. The motorcycle wave is also useful. It helps keep riders looking far ahead in traffic. If you are scanning your surroundings for other bikes, chances are you will also be aware of upcoming hazards. I will only give the ADV salute while riding my bike to those on a bike, with the sticker. Those driving a cage with the sticker might not be the one who put it there, and I don't need a 4000 lb projectile pointed at me. For a response to the salute, I like the wave. If it is an FF, I have at least acknowledged them, and if it is a pissed off driver, it might help defuse the situation. So if you don't like the salute, don't put the sticker on. |

A few years back I was driving the wife's Honda Odyssey with the kids in the back headed to my Monster in Law's house on Long Island. Lo and behold, I spot an ADV adorned GS a few vehicles up. I edged my way through traffic, toot the horn and flip the salute through the open window. The wife panics and tells me to stop, we're going to get shot,etc... The rider gleefully beeps back and returns the salute and we go on our merry way. After I explained it all to the missus, she still couldn't understand why it was funny.
![]() After some detective work on here, it turned out that the rider was OffTheGrid. |

For some, the ADVsticker is no different than a "live to ride" sticker on a Harley! It's just another farkle.

I can't believe I read this entire thread and no one has posted the correct answer.
Sell your vehicles to other inmates. Problem solved. (That said, if I get the salute from a cage I'm usually like "WTF?!"; it's only when I get it from other bikes that I laugh and salute back)
