2007 Bmw F650gs Dakar Luggage Question?

Hey Guys!

I have done some searching but everything seems to be pretty out dated ...

I am trying to find the best possible option for hard luggage for my bike!
I have been looking at the Pelican cases, as they look like the best option.

I have been looking at the Moose Expedition Rack, but on the stores web-site it doesn't look like it fits the 2007 model: http://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/moos...ck-system.html
with the Pelican cases:

I was wondering also if anyone had this rack and how bulky it is? or how it looks on the bike without the cases?

My 2nd option was the SW motech system with the pelican cases:
rack: http://aviciouscycle.ca/MainPages/pr...productid=2226
locks: http://aviciouscycle.ca/MainPages/Pr...?productid=458
cases: http://aviciouscycle.ca/MainPages/pr...productid=3461

I wasn't sure what my best option would be, or if there would be anything else comparable in hard cases!

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks!

Pelicans are sturdy but heavy as hell, along with the racks they will add a good 30 lbs before you put any gear in them. Not really helpful on the already porky Beemer....

Are you going to stick to the road or also off-road, where it's likely that you are going to crash? In the latter case I'd look at the Giant Loop Siskious or Adventure-Spec Magadan bags instead, 1/6 of the weight.

My current set-up ... carrying a back-pack is getting old ...
I am hoping to do a lot of camping, some offroad and would like to be able to carry a case of beer ... or two ...

If you are doing much rough stuff, soft bags are better IMHO. Not as much risk of injury to the leg in case you dump it. If you need the security of hard bags there are quite a few options. I run the factory bags on my F650 for commuting duty, narrow for most purposes, but expandable when needed. I take them off when riding off the beaten path.

I like my 1550 Pelicans. I got them through Caribou Cases. I have them with the Givi monokey side racks. If you damage the cases, you can return them for a free replacement. The locks holding them to the racks may break if you dump your bike, which may be a negative if you plan to do a lot of off-road stuff (people carry spares), but the cases are sturdy. I'm happy with mine. They also hold a lot of beer.

I do like the soft bags, but unfortunately I will need to lock everything ... I would love to have both options. Do the pelicans mount to the givi tubular rack? http://aviciouscycle.ca/MainPages/pr...productid=2267

Thanks again for all the input!

Caribou sells the Pelicans predrilled and with the parts to fit to the Givi tubular rack (http://cariboucases.corecommerce.com...ivi-Racks.html). The one in the link you sent is the same side rack set I have (the PL188), so it should be compatible. You can check with Roger at Caribou to be sure. He also posts under the "Vendors" subforum on this site.

He also has configurations for other rack brands as well. I just went with Givi b/c the racks were cheapest (I think $160 vs. ~$300 for the others).

You can also buy the cases separately and purchase a (Givi) mount kit from Caribou, or there are other options involving the Pelican cases - check out the F650.com faqs to see what others did. I just went the Caribou route b/c it was simple.
