Actually, it's a really popular place for grandmas from Kansas to stop and take in the majestic vistas. I think there are spotted owlivores that live on the cliffs and they don't want the save-the-whalers to step on 'em.

Could you give a short report on the VTR? What do you like/not like? I may need to move to something cheaper than my GS, and there are several VTR's for sale in the neighbourhood.

Depends on what youre after. NO WAY is it a replacement for the GS. Different animal altogether. it's comparing oranges and monkey poo.

Ugly stuff first:

ergos are pretty non adjustable.
gas tank size blows. bout 4.3 gallons. with 48mm carbies...that's about 90-100 miles before a refill.

Mirrors may as well not even be on the bike. worthless. I'm still looking for a mod I am willing to do for that

Aftermarket goodies? nah. beyond basic pile and cans, not much. All RC51 stuff.

The good stuff.
I did a full winter of commuting on it and it handles all that stuff no problem.

the motor is stonkin. big brutal Vtwin. and it has grun all over the tach map. no holes.

handles any twists and turns I care to try as fast as I want to try them. Only the racers on the track have ever complained at all about chassis

the brakes to me have good feed back and work well. other complain thay are mushy. But I like the progressive feel. more control.

the front is a bit wooden stock. I have a revalve and spring kit that I need to get in there and put on it. But I am in no hurry.

it's a freaking hoot. completely visceral. If a Harley is a headsmans axe and an R1 is a rapier, this sucker is a fookin claymore (the sword not the munitions)

Oh I have run across something of late that might make you think again. I had the crank on mine replace under warranty. it was machined incorrectly and that destroyed a cam chain at 4k. Now I have heard of a couple other local 'hawk pilots having the same thing hapen at about 20k. All fixed under warranty so far as I know and without half the hassle I went through. Somine was not only the test case it was the worst case. But I have had *zero* defects since.

Mods I did:

two bros high pipes. - hindsight...low pipes are better. then you can wear regular boots, and take the missus. but they free up that Vtwin BOOM.

Sharkskinz lower. looked great for a year or so. but the heat from the pipes is not good for it and it is pretty beat up.

chieftan 133db horns - loud at both ends.

cheap ass fog lights. - get lots of the stuff here. not the best but they help and I used the cheapos for testing. I'll go to better ones later.

Zero Gravity screen - the stocker runs the edgebead right across the guages. can't see shit. the double bubble fixes that.

other than that I have not seen any mods I needed to make except for the tank and mirrors.

living with it:
the guages are clear as a bell. Speedo dark, tacho white. trip/odo in digital. in 2 years I have had no lights go out on the dash. no gas guage, just the ROD (red light of doom). switches show no problems. the levers are adjustable for reach.

I can't say how the OEM tires are. I picked up a nail in the first 170 miles and it didn't like plugging

I've had it on sweepers at 120 and it was steady as a rock.

the air filter is pricey at 40 bones. but the levers are cheap

I've had no comfort problems except the usual sportbike pain when working through slow traffic. once to 40 or so the wind takes the weight off the wrists.

On the whole I don't think I would swap a GS for one. But I sure would take one along with a GS.

As for me...I'm keeping mine. I'm gonna cane the snot out of it until the '03 guzzi lemans starts showing up for sale used.

I had already purchased tickets and made plans for Laguna Seca when "ADVride to Choopa" was announced. Next year the ADVrider gathering will come first, wherever it is.

I wasn't thinking of using a VTR to replace the GS, but I was considering it as a bike that would be fun to ride for half the price.

Looks like I'm heading off topic--time to take a pic of the bike.
