Speed Trippin' down the coast...

Hello folks.

First, a brief (thankfully ) bit of background for ya: I've been here since 2003; decided I wasn't going to join until I had something to say in the form of a Ride Report. Well, I still don't actually have anything to say, but I'm gonna subject you to my pointless musings anyway....WAIT, don't leave yet! It's mostly just photos- you have my word.

This trip was hatched last September from the remnants of a canceled Rocky Mountain ride. My Valkyrie-riding buddy, Steve, hurt his knee a month out from that trip and had to cancel due to surgery. Various forces seemed to be aligning against me, so I decided to postpone that trek 'til this year (coming up in August).

So...I was left with two weeks vacation, a tour-prepped 2001 Triumph Speed Triple and the need to go somewhere.

What I decided on may not have been the ludicrous splendor of Colorado Aspens or Utah red rock, but it was good, just the same.

Stick around for some coastal meandering, mountain twisties, and finally, dozens of rip-snorting Speed Triples.

So, with the bike stuffed to the gills with all manner of necessities (and un-necessities)...

...I set off. Central Pennsylvania to Ocean City, MD, where my pal Kem and his girl Jamie were staying. Hmmm....cheap lodging and drinking buddies? I'm in!

Okay, so it's not Bolivia or Patagonia...I'll get there eventually...just dipping my toes in the water for now.

See, in the correct light, the Atlantic seaboard ain't so bad...

Kem and Jamie...

Yours truly.... What?!?! He was askin' for it!

This seagull measured 1575 feet, yet averted his gaze in my presence...

"Look, there's another body!"

Standing in line at the Orange Julius...

I spent three days there, being a complete load, and drank many, many beers. In case you're wondering: Yes, there is actual riding in this report ...I just had to ease into it.

So...I left Ocean City with my sights set on Virginia Beach; thought I might like to check out my old haunts. I was stationed at Langley Air Force Base from 87-91 (), and haven't been back since.

On the way out of town, I did a brief run to Assateague Island, home of free-roaming, beach-going (surfing?) horses...

So, with enough sun and booze to tide me over for at least a day or two, I moseyed on down the DelMarVa Peninsula in search of a way across the Bay...

"Hmmm...which way's South?"

Fortunately, at the last minute, somebody built a bridge/tunnel 17.6 miles long that undulates over and under the Bay...whew, that was close.

File photos here:

The skies threatened, this day, but never unleashed their fury...thankfully.

Going Down...

...and out the other side.

I gotta say... I was expecting fierce crosswinds out there, but that was not the case. No traffic and minimal winds created a surreal experience: just kicked back in 'cruise mode', snagging shots and staring out across the Bay.

Once I got to Virginia Beach, all desire to stop ceased. I dunno, it just seemed different to what I remembered-very cold and industrial. Could be a case of 'rose-colored retrospect' or that I was simply tired, hungry, and impatient. In any event, I pressed on with the Outer Banks in mind.

After circling Chesapeake half-a-dozen times, I finally found the correct road, and embarked on a pitch-black video game ride to the coast; then crossed the bridge into Kitty Hawk, NC, where I promptly (and grossly) overpaid for a hotel room ("Just Renovated!"-sure...in 1971).

Finally...rest!!!! But not before beer . But alas, there are no stores open.

Well, at least there are roaches in the bathroom...

After a restless night's sleep ("I think I hear something!"), I awoke to slightly overcast, but not threatening, skies. And with a belly full of pancakes, bacon, and coffee, I set out to cover some ground I hadn't touched in nearly twenty years.

Off to the Wright Brothers memorial:

Fantastic presentation here....these guys were astoundingly innovative at every turn.

The original flight path...

I headed South from here, across the Oregon Inlet, and onto Pea Island...

When traveling alone, ya gotta find a way to get yourself in the shots...no matter how awkward:

Damn, I'm a lanky bastard...

Great report, Md's eastern shore is near and dear to my heart, in fact I'm headed there for the weekend. I totally agree about Virginia beach, don't care to ever go back there. There are a many east coast towns that get overlooked, glad to see you bringing them to light.

My summers growing up were spent at Nags Head. After a 20 year lapse went back to find the big old beach house. Finally found it tucked between McMansions and it looked like a out building. Sometimes its best not to go back again I guess.
