GMX30 Problem

Has anybody had a problem with the GMX30? Mine started acting up today. Screen says "check XM antenna". If i unplug it and plug it back in it will work for a couple minutes, but it keeps doing the same thing.

Had that happen to mine twice and Garmin ended up replacing them. After about 8 months my third replacement now becomes so "hot" I can barely touch it so I think it is about to give up the ghost also. It looks like I may be going unto my fourth antenna in 3 years!!!!

Most of the time it is used in my vehicle sparingly and a couple of long bike trips a year. One would think they should last longer than that.

That's what I figured. Obviously they have an engineering problem.

How long did the replacement take? I'm leaving on long trip next week.

It took about 2+ weeks to get one from Garmin. I had another one from a packaged GPS deal and used that one. The problem comes in with XM/Sirius as they will try to charge you an activation fee each time you change out the antenna since it is the radio. After around 30 minutes on the phone with them they usually relent and activate it. It is hard to explain to them that I did not purchase another radio, just got a replacement for a defective product.

If the screen you're talking about is a Zumo screen and the Zumo is in the bike mount, it's the contact pins on the bottom of the mount that are causing the problem. I spray mine with contact cleaner about once a month to keep everything working.

The problem persists in both the car and MC mount. All my equipment in only about month old and has never been MC trip.

I turned the unit on again last night and it has been working ever since. We'll have to see how long it lasts.

My GXM-30 finally gave up about 2 months ago. I think mine is a short in the USB cable. With all fairness, mine was purchased used and has been working for the past 2+ years without fail pretty much everyday, so I got a good use out of it.

Thank goodness my wife got one in about the time my died and I've been "borrowing" it, although she told me for an upcoming trip, I'm back to a standard XM radio, because she wants her antenna!

I did notice that XM charged me a "transfer fee" from moving the service from one antenna, to the other.
