Just got back from a 9000 mile Alaska trip on the $500 Silverwing Interstate. The only problems with the bike were a leaking front cover gasket (made a new one) and a regulator failure (aftermarket). I also hit a moose and destroyed the Vetter fairing but that's another story.

Here are my two under $1,500 bikes:

Paid too much for this one, and posted in the before and after thread:

Paid $50 for this one two years ago and is my current project. BMW said it was shipped to BMW dealer Friedrich Vis in Aachen, 30 April 1952. Does that make this a 1952 model? Numbers match. It should be a fun, if costly, restoration:

Edit: [according to the specs] It's got 44hp and only weighs 385lbs (dry), so it's a fun little bike.
I had this exact bike... Tons of fun, except for the pogo stick shocks when hitting a bump on a curve- made u feel like it would buck u off at any time...
I had everything off mine with drag handle bar to make it look like a cafe racer sort-of .... I eventually did clean it up but here's what I looked like shortly after buying it...

Great bike. I had a $300 1982 GL500 that I rode 4k miles down to the Panama Canal in 1997. No problems except for a battery which I replaced in Guatemala.
Sold it in the no man's land between the borders of Panama and Costa Rica for $500 and flew home from Panama.

how do you manage something like that? put a "for sale" sign on it and wait? seems like you could be waiting there for a long, long time.
