I don't want to give away all my secrets, but here is the big one... If you buy right, and can do mechanical work yourself, motorcycling doesn't have to cost you much if anything.

Here is a short list of bikes I've bought for under $1500 (some well, well under):

1979 CB650 6500 miles
1979 CB750K
Dream 305 (3 of them)
Hodaka Ace 90 nearly mint, just didn't run :-)
1985 FJ1100 17,000 miles (this was an absolute steal)

1980 CB750F

1982 CB900F

There are lots of bikes out there for under $1500, you just have to keep your eyes open and have cash in your pocket if you stumble across a deal.

Darn, gave away another secret. :-)

A $500 81 Seca 550.

$900 82 Seca 550.

I paid between $700 to $1300 for the 81 GPz550s

I've got a grand in the mini enduros, that includes getting them running and all lights working.

There's one to ride, one to race, and one for parts.

I wanted that superbike look or a Nighthawk S... this Zephyr showed up a mile from where I lived (after glossing the entire country on cycle trader and other sites) for $900:

18 years ago I got this SR500 for $150 and here are two stages of development to date, still less than $1500 including a 528cc/cam/36 Mikuni. First was the spray bomb flame job toward a British hot rod look, then a street track look that's not been on the street. I want to go away from the tail section to a 60's steel fender/narrow cobra head like seat to be different:

Hope you find them interesting. The tail is made up from a CB900F tail, the pipe is a one off we built from mandrel bent tubing I got from JC Whitney. Notice the Honda VF500F caliper too. Lots of work on the cheap.

Then there was the Sherpa T at $450, but that was 1971... and I was much younger back here in 1974:

And the $500 short tracker after being painted a bit...

How cool would it be to have that one with a set of lights...

There was a midget in my hometown who rode one of those YSRs. Made a perfect streetbike for him. No shit.

Mega-slobbers on that Guzzi, corroded exhaust, stuck calipers and all. That's exactly what I want to find on that special day far in the future when I scrape together $1,000 cash money all at once.

1993 GS500. I paid $1500 for it in 2007. I put 10,000 mi on it, rode it into a ditch on the dragon, and sold it a year later for $1200.
