20067 Dakar: need fuel pump, in Albania, what models may fit

2007 Dakar, dual spark, US model:, 50,000 miles

I am on a trip thru Eastern Europe and arrived today in Albania, South of Korci by about 70 km's. The bike died. Putting the GS911 on narrowed it down in a hurry to error 560 "fuel pump short circuit to earth or open circuit, or output stage overloaded". I pulled the pump and the wiring to the pump looks fine, i was hoping it was just the broken wire issue.

Nothing I could do along the side of the road, so I put things together and low and behold it started again. I shut it off and coasted down the mountain to the parking lot of a hotel I was extremely fortunate to be near, let alone a hotel which even has wifi. There I started the bike again, rode around the parking lot, then back on the road and that lasted 100 yards. Dead again. Pushed it back to the hotel. They have a covered spot for me to work on the bike, rain is expected later today. So as it goes I am very fortunate.

GS911 confirmed same error again. I will pull the fuel pump again and look for something obvious (the screen was clean). I am afraid it is shot.

Does anybody have a car fuel pump they have used (european car) or general specs?

I have a 2013 GS which I believe has the same fuel pump. The dealer found a problem with the wires where they entered the fuel pump unit from the outside on top. They could put pressure on the wires and the pump would stop. If that is your problem you may be able to fix it. They replaced the entire unit. If it is not that you can pull up suppliers from e-bay that just sell pumps and maybe they have a contact e-mail or number to call to find what may work from another brand of bike with fuel injection. Look inside their store and see if you can see what they are listing for other brands. Another option (and maybe the best) is to contact:

http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Home/index.php.

I have found them to be very helpful. They have a phone number and would quickly sort out your options. They have used BMW parts and may know how to ship you something where you are located. Good luck.

I wish it had been the wiring issue, it was the first thing I looked for.

I bit the bullet today and ordered from Greece a new BMW fuel assy. I was hoping for a car fuel pump that I could source locally. I know there will be model that fits, but I can not do a trial and error method here. The new one is spendy at 300 euro's, but so is staying in a hotel longer then it needs to be

the new pump is supposed to be couriered out tonight and I will travel across the border tomorrow and pick it up. If that works I am good to go.

Now I hope the diagnosis was correct.

Thanks all for your help.

This may, or may not, be relevant but in this thread;

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57153

he describes troubles and some solutions for his BMW. Pumps and
electronics may be interchangeable. On another thread, although I
can't recall where so perhaps another inmate might jump in, an
Audi pump was used as a replacement. Good Luck and keep us
apprised.
