Camping recommendations in northern NY
Looking to camp next weekend (May 24 - 26). We are planning on leaving Friday afternoon from Kingston Ontario - ride a few hours, camp and then spend Sat and Sun pooking around Lake placid / lake champlain area.
Trying to find a suitable spot to camp on the Friday night, ideally near the tug hill area or west Adirondacks. I'm hoping to find a spot where we aren't surrounded by RV's. Whetstone park is the perfect location - anyone stayed here before? Is it legal to camp anywhere in the state forest area? Thanks in advance for any insight and recommendations! |

Camping
Camping is allowed in the forest preserve provided you're 150 feet away from any road, trail, or any body of water. There are many free, first come, first serve primitive campsites. These primitive campsites usually will have a pit privy, a picnic table, and a fireplace or fire ring.
I'm aware of free primitive sites along Floodwood Road, near Saranac Inn, and also around Horseshoe Lake, which is just south of Tupper Lake. There's also a group of primitive sites along the Coreys Road, between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake. |
