An issue that can affect the TD5 engine is oil travelling through the injection wire harness and contaminating the ECU unit. This causes the engine to misfire and necessitates changing out the wiring loom.

The good news is that on the Defender the loom is longer (than the Disco f'r instance), so it shouldn't be a problem until a much higher mileage.

Injectors are very expensive (>£350 each) - as long as it starts and runs OK, no excessive smoke or noise from the turbo it should be fine.

Exhaust manifolds can be weak on them as well, particularly if they've been chipped. Look for broken studs or signs of blow-by.

Check the condition of the oil and fluids and budget for changing them all if necessary. If you get a LR dealer to do the service, it will be very expensive.

Usual things - wear an old overall, get underneath it, check for off-road damage, play in the propshafts, leaks from gearboxes/diffs, etc.

Oh and check low-box works fine, sometimes it can get sticky if not used regularly.
You're a star! Any suggestions on how to check the wiring loom or are you saying that at 40k I shouldn't need to worry?

And Nick - you're a git!

No, I mean it, good luck, it sounds like a good buy if it's at a good price, but I don't know enough about landies to advise, I just like driving them!

If the mileage is genuine (check service records/old MOT's), you shouldn't need to worry about the wiring harness issue. It happened at about 70k on my Disco.

If you want to confirm, pull the plug off the ECU unit and have a look. (I think it's in the seatbox under the passenger seat on the Defender.) If there's oil present on the pins it's not the end of the world, but will cost several hundred to fix.

So I've finally bought one!!! I don't get to pick it up for about 10 days

In the meantime, I shall have to make do with plenty more pics and videos

How about some serious articulation:
