So what would you LR experts suggest I do with my 2003 4.6 Disco?

It's just 100K, and I presume something catastrophic will go wrong soon. Does anyone do good diesel conversions? Tranny rebuilds?

I would rather do it and plan it then get caught suddenly.

Mavette has a similar Disco - and things are starting to go wrong, but nothing that you could've predicted and/or prevented. Like the wheel bearing seal went last week, pissing oil over the break pads to add insult to injury. Every 2 or 3 months it seems something is going wrong. It like the car new that the payments were done on the loan and now it wants the money on repairs!

So if you love it, keep paying as and when things go wrong. If you don't, get another car!

Mrs. Srbenda loves it, and it's paid for, so no sense in getting rid of it, I'd just like to "strengthen" it.

Preferably with a diesel motor.

So here is the deal; my eleven year old loves Disco's and claims he wants one for his first car. I had a 96 and absolutely loved it but recognize the inherent issues and I believe I have sorted out a solution to one of my biggest complaints, the engine.

We intend to put a Cadillac Northstar V8 in a non-running Disco! A clean broken Disco can be purchased for about $8.00 USD and nearly free is a perfect starting point. I am pretty sure I have got all of the details sorted out but we are a couple of years away from starting. If anyone is interested in attempting this feat, I would be happy to assist.

No question the engine and tranny are the weak points. I cannot imagine the electronics that a Northstar V8 requires to operate, but that seems like a bit of trouble.

You need to address the head gasket issue on the Northstar first. Best solution is http://www.northstarperformance.com/sgstuds.php Then that motor would be awesome in a Disco.

I had those studs put in my son's Deville and it is has been perfect ever since.

Done and done; figured that had to be addressed before anything else. We are looking for donor vehicles.

I got some vibrations last week.

It looks like I need a driveshaft, so I am having mine rebuilt/remanned by a local guy.

Educate Me

I am going to look at 2 rovers today. Both are said to be (fairly) rust free that sat many years in a barn out west. They are 61 and 63. The 63 is the nicer vehicle and the guy is asking $2500. He claims its all there and the floorboards and firewall has no rust.

I do know they had aluminum bodies and some had galvanized chasis.

I will hope to get the rig and either put a 6cylinder diesel or possibly a small v8 gas motor.

What should I look out for? Am I nuts? He has info for some parts resources in the states, and a complete driveline for sale also for $600.

I will be either getting a rover or willys as soon as I can find the right 1.

I will get pics if I can.

You may want to fire out some of these questions over at dweb - the fountain of knowledge for all things discovery.

www.discoweb.org

A few people have done the engine/box conversion on Defenders but I haven't heard of a Discovery conversion.

Why not stick with the Rover v8? A good set of heads, cam, exhaust manifold and intake should get you to 250 reliable BHP with no real loss in mpg. After that you could always add the Janspeed turbo kit or a supercharger.

How much power do you actually need? These are off road vehicles not race cars

320 hp and better fuel economy than the Rover motor..
Seems obvious to me

Why do you need 320 hp on an off road vehicle? Better fuel economy I can see but you could achieve better fuel economy by going diesel - using either the TdI, TD5 or ZSD

BTW you know that you'll also more than likely need to change axles and of course springs ... the stock probably won't take the additional ponies. Interesting project though ... wish you luck .... post pictures

BTW - here's my underpowered, thirsty, unreliable 4.0 Discovery on the way back from the arctic ocean
