Finally, proper tires!

I run 255/85R16 BFG Mud Terrains on my '65 hybrid, but didn't need that much meat in my diet for the Disco. One thing I knew, there's a weakest link in every system... and this old bone is connected to that old bone. You start getting carried away with lifts, massive tires, gobs of wheel travel... and you start messing with the integrity a well balanced design. All things are a compromise... sure. I understand that. For me, a well tested Old Man Eum suspensive (giving mild lift) with quality protection and equipment are in order. So, what the hell sort of tire did I get then? I chose the Goodyear DuraTrac 215/85R16 in the 10 ply. Why this size? Well, I love a taller skinny tire (not getting too big so that mods need to be done to allow a full set of chains)... and that 215/85R16 is really the mutt's nuts! Perfect size for Disco and RR Classic... IMHO. And that 10 ply... LOVE IT! A more firm ride without being harsh. These DuraTrac tires really remind me of another great tire... BFG TrackEdge. These are like... impossible to obtain here in WA so... it'll be the DuraTrac. So far... I do like them. A step-up from the AT, but not quite a full MT. A big more road noise than an AT, but nothing like a MT. A compromise I can surely live with.

I do believe this family truckster has come along way since I purchased it as a beat-down neglected Rover. I like to keep things running in top order... I mean, look at my occupants... I don't want to let them down!

That's a good looking rig you have there chap

Any chance of a pic from the front to show the size of the tyres? I run 235/85s on my defender - narrow by many peoples perspectives, especially for mud tyres.

Green one is mine and the red is a friends. I am north of SLO. Very close to where you might be flying. Off on vacation myself.

BTW you know that you'll also more than likely need to change axles and of course springs ... the stock probably won't take the additional ponies. Interesting project though ... wish you luck .... post pictures

BTW - here's my underpowered, thirsty, unreliable 4.0 Discovery on the way back from the arctic ocean

Northstar doesn't weigh much more than the Rover motor.
As far as axles, I'm praying for common sense.

Looks like the Hunter Liggett area. Hope it's cooler there than here.

Just saw that on Wildlandfire.com. 1/2 mile? A little too close for comfort.

Was that pic taken at the firing range west of Paso? I made my worst drop on a fire there in 2000 when I was flying for the LP out of Arroyo Grande. Anyways, love that long wheelbase green Landrover. Must be an ex military rig. Have fun.

Haven't looked at the engine weight ... but that's good to know if I ever blow mine.

On the subject of engine swaps ... this may come in handy. Chevy 350 not Northstar and Defender instead of Disco.

Good write up though

1/2 mile is correct. My family has a place out there and was out there earlier in the morning. Actually the 110 is not military, just estnor green.

The only weird thi8ng was learning how to shift with my left hand. Everything else was pretty easy. Provided you have windows (I added mine) to see while merging and intersections its no big deal at all. Plus you have more room for your feet
