Hey, that electric fence module could come in handy.

I had a chance at a Rhd ex military like that but sense won out over dollars.

Seems obvious to me

So I find myself in need of a vehicle as the wife's beater has had a catastrophic oil related failure. I have been searching locally for a non-running Disco but haven't found a good platform to use. I found one on eBay with all kind of goodies including the engine swap adapters but figure it's going to get expensive by the time the bidding is over.

On a side thought, what are the issues with bringing a Canadian(ex military D90 or D 110) vehicle into the US? I live in Georgia which is an easy state to get things titled be the salvage or whatever.

Check your import rules. I believe you have a 25year or older limit.

Even ex-military D110s are rare as rockinghorse poop here and if you do find one it's going to be spendy.

D90 ex-mil are a tiny bit easier to find but they are rough. I've seen a few and most of them would have been better
off on the artillery range.

Ex-Mil are far worse than ex-rental

So how much is a Defender here (US)? Just wondering if I should just tidy up an 25 yr old ex-Mil Defender in Blighty and ship it over...

If memory serves, D110's were only imported for one year, 1993, with a full external cage, any color as long as it was white, and only 500 of them. D90's only imported in 1994, 1995, and 1997 ( No 1996 model and soft tops only in 1994).

All models were exclusively with the V8i was the only engine. Autos and manual transmissions, though I'm not sure if both were offered all years.

Wasn't 1985 the first year for the Defenders? With the 25 yr old exemptions for US imports, I think extra-nice 1985 D90's and D110's would be perfect for importing. Right hand drive will be a bit of a turn off for some... I know I'm always clipping curbs for a day or so when I try to drive over on your side of the pond!

Look on eBay US completed listings to get an idea of the asking prices and sold/not-sold results. IMHO eBay tends to reflect more wholesale price than retail. Prices vary wildly...

A partially restored RHD 1985 Defender sold for $7K (here), while another guy is trying (unsuccessfully) to get $70k for his US Spec D110 with 140,000 miles on it (here)

I know I personally would be very interested in figuring out a 1985 D90 or D110 import under the 25 year import rules...

I would love to get my hands on a fixer-upper 110.

While in Alaska during the late '90's, I bought a cherry '67 109 with no eng/trans/tranny for $600.00 but couldn't afford to ship it back and finish it.

Defenders - or better 90, 110 or 127 started 1983/84. They have been renamed to Defender in 1990, and the 127 to 130.
RHD was only in GB. Just buy one i.e. from Germany and you have a LHD.

I looked into that, importing one into Canada. Might be different for the U.S. of course, but although the vehicle wouldn't have cost too much in the U.K., the shipping, taxes, import duties etc soon made it a bit too costly for me. Not ridiculously so, and it would cost far more to buy one that were already in North America - if you could find one.

But I was looking in 2005 when anybody and his brother could - and did - buy ex MOD Landies. Nowadays one company (not even sure of its name) has a contract to buy all the ex-MOD Landies in the U.K. I haven't checked, but I assume that because they have a monopoly the price is considerably higher than what it was.

As an aside you'll be able to source a 127(ie 130) V8 with LHD usually from usual the army surplus dealers in the UK.....standard rapier tractor unit or in ambulance format make an ideal overland camper...

It's only the Wolf landies that are being managed through one company. And the issue is that they aren't ever selling them, simply rebuilding them and putting them back in to service. As it stands right now, I don't think the UK army is buying any new Landies.

In terms of price of the older landies, it seems you can find them for 3 to 5k sterling... spend a couple grand tidying up, and then maybe another thousand to get it here... So for 10 to 15k USD you could have a landy that wasn't in too bad shape...

Hey fellas

I am looking to tap into the adv brain trust. I have got the bug to buy a Land Rover LR3. Currently have a Chevy Blazer, 2 door version and with a baby on the way not very practical. I have heard that they are pretty reliable as far as Land Rovers go, sure some may have some bugs with the suspension sometimes, but the jag engines are pretty bullet proof. I am not shy to fixing things, so having to do some maintenance doesn't worry me.

So is what I have heard correct? Am I completely crazy? Have I been watching too much Top Gear?

There is no way in hell I am going to buy a mini van So I figure the size of this thing is perfect and will be able to do camping/road trips with the fam as an added bonus.

Any advice appreciated.
