My new Yamaha C3 (pics)

Today I picked up my "new" 2009 C3 off of craigslist for $1200 (talked down from $1500). It has 2,000 miles and was a "liquor bike". It's in near perfect condition. Sweet ride. I just drove it home...about 20 miles on some fun backroads. Speedo was pegged on the flats (over 45 mph). Very easy to ride/drive.

My initial thoughts compared to my 1984 Honda 125:

The c3 is so much lighter and rides a lot more like my road bike (bicycle), I don't have to massively countersteer to get it moving. Just a lean and flick of the bars...that's nice. The seat was weird at first but I like it...it's also lower to the ground. TONS of underseat storage.

Brakes were 1000% better (if you can believe that). Acceleration not as bad as I thought it would be...will be getting some dr. pulley's for sure. Top end speed totally acceptable >40 and I'm good. A couple big hills and I was plugging along at 30mph by the speedo. I drove a Ruckus a couple of years back and it's speed was totally unacceptable right from the gun. I was expecting this but the C3 is much faster in it's stock config.

On the 125 when I went off the gas I would slow way down fast...the c3 has a lot of coast. This is nice and very bike like.

I was pretty unsure if I'd like a 50cc but with the mods (c3rider.com) it should be totally fine and fun for my fairly flat 3 mile commute. My plan is to get taller tires, lighter roller pulleys and then pull the restrictor washer.

I'm also happy to be legal/legit but around here I've never gotten hassled by the cops. I never really get over 45mph on my 3 mile commute. I do have 50cc stickers on the honda tho!

If you are hitting 45 you don't have any restrictions on that scoot, great find, you got a killer deal.

The joy of riding a 25 year old scooter is that you don't care what it looks like! The solar panel came with my VW Passat as a battery tender for transport...I spliced it to the honda battery so I didn't have to worry about a dead battery...Keeps the battery topped off all day long.

the other pvc thingy is a roller bar for bicycle training...I cycle behind it and draft to simulate race conditions. The key is to go fast and get close to the scoot, an awesome workout...here's a video:

Rich_SC,
Were you packing when you made that steal? I'd buy a C3 in a minute at that price.

Good deal!

Good deal, good buy!
I saw a fellow heading towards Lake Lure on rt9 on the way home this afternoon. Silver like yours.
We waved. At least another scooter nut will respond when you do.

Over at c3rider.com they have a cheap way to firm up the front forks by swapping to a heavier oil. You should derestrict and see if that gives you any extra giddyup. I ordered lighter roller pulleys and taller tires already.

Non performance mods I'm gonna do are a rear taillight mod with high output LED's that will give over 500 lumens for my brake/running light. iPhone and coffee mug mount. Windshield. Some kind of rear luggage rack (ala small milkcrate).

Hi Rich. Would you happen to have a pic of the storage compartment? And is it insulated for beverages?

I love the look of that thing.

It's just plastic, not insulated. I guess it would hold a 6 pack and ice.

here are some google pics: http://is.gd/21v5G

i've already thought about using the storage as a cooler for drinks and such, but the problem is that it's not insulated AND it's right above the engine, so anything you put in there will melt pretty quick...if you did want to try it out, i would get a heavy plastic liner, like a Hefty trash bag, and seal the edges to keep any water from leaking down into the bike
i think you could fit 12 beers and ice in there plus a few other small items. the cool part would be to show at a bbq, and pop the lid and presto- your the man

Thats the bike Sarah Connor has in the first Terminator film, when she is riding into work late for her waitress job.
