That is BY FAR the best car video I've seen in a while. It follows the Urban Outlaw in that it is not the number of dollars you put in, it is how you apply those dollars in a realistic and truly purposeful manner. Good stuff and thanks for sharing.

doG, I'd love to find an SC of that era. My biggest fear is an engine that would need a small fortune - I'd have to pay someone else which would kill the project for me. But nice to dream

Sounds ominous.

In all the research I've done, I recall no mention of such a kit. IMS bearing replacement kits, tools, IMS Guardian-- all these I've read quite a lot about, but what is a "Final Solution" other than a proper open bearing, or even a pressure-fed one.

Where would you take one for a PPI on the Denver/Boulder area? I've found a few online that I'm interested in, but I have no idea where to take them to get inspected.

Sorry to hear about the lost purchase, BTW-- the array of options on 996's make it really tempting for me to just dive in when I find one that catches my eye-- especially if it's halfway across the country.

Speaking of 996s, I have a very possibly incendiary question to ask: Which would win, performance-wise, an E46 M3 or a "regular" 996? I don't really care if the 996 is slower (my dream machine is actually a 911sc), I was just wondering.

I'll see if I can find this for you this weekend. I think I saw it in a link that is in ImoOOO's thread in the Rennlist: "Dragged home one of these."

It's tough slogging, working through these IMS threads.

In the meantime, here's a thread on another guy's solution to the problem, for your reading enjoyment:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/boxst...gn-idea-6.html

P.S. Found it:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...ring-life.html

The critical thing for me, if I was getting a 996 or 997.1, would be to get one where the kit can be installed with the engine in frame. So, IIRC, this would be about a 2002 or later model.

Seems like the current IMS retrofit is a pretty good solution, even if not perfect. I think the key is that even in the unlikely event the replacement bearing fails, it doesn't break apart, enter the engine case, and destroy your motor. You might end with your Porsche on a flat bed requiring the tranny to be dropped to replace the bearing again, but you won't need an engine rebuild. And evidently very, very few IMS bearings have failed.

I like the idea of replacing the IMS bearing at 60K intervals. Or just do it with every clutch replacement if you have a proper Porsche with a manual transmission.
