When I was in for my 600 mile service at the dealer there was an ol' timer there on his 30 anniversary F800 that had taken a series of large O-Rings and covered both stock grips...not only did it give a very comfortable grip, but it looked nice too. Said he had been doing it for years on all of his BMW's.

My tiny hands probably didn't need it, but if I do end up doing it, I'll post the size of the O-Ring.

There is an idea! I like that. Care to post the size ? Or does somebody know? I am toying with the idea of installing the clamshell Kuryakin for the GL1800. I believe they'd fit and if they would they would be the perfect size for my fat fingers. I know, I know they are chrome, and thats the only thing holding me back right now. That and that they are 80-100 bones.

But they are so nice and fat! I loved the feel on the wing.

It was the first thing I asked, and in his very colorful way, he said he couldn't remember what the size was...but he had got them from McMasters.

If I figure it out, I'll make sure to post.

Have to tell you...it was very clever and comfy...and the heat still comes thru.

Oh man, I wish I had something to measure with me, to see what the diameter of the grips is. McMasters has hundreds of O rings that would fit. Anybody close to a caliper to measure the outside of the grips?

Most motorcycle grips are too small for my hands.
My buddy gave me a pair of grip puppies so I tried them, but one came loose on a ride and I cut them off roadside. I really didn't like the vague feel of them anyway.

Back home, I carefully removed the stock grips with a razor knife, using a steel spatula beneath to protect he grip heaters. Then bought two pairs of dirt bike grips and safety wired the larger throttle grips over each heater. (I didn't use grip glue as I normally do, because I didn't want to risk damaging the heaters next time I change out the grips...)

They work well, have great control feel and are sightly larger in diameter and softer than the stock grips which aids in gripping them.

O rings sounds sketchy.... especially if you ride the rain.

The over grips have been working great. Once they wear out I may try cutting off the stock grips but the PITA factor + risk of damaging the heater element hardly seems worth it vs. the easy fix of using the renthals or some other thin off road grips over the stock silly skinny grips.

Thanks! Ordered some orings with 5 mm thickness and 28mm inside diameter. That should do it.

Grips

Just bought some ProGrip Soft Touch Rally Grips from the Cycle Gear store in Austin, Texas. Cost $9.99. These are very nice silicon grips. I carefully cut and pealed back the stock thin-grips, making sure I did not cut the main terminals at the inside of the grip stop ring or the heating element under the grip. They came off very cleanly and easily.

I then used the hair spray tip and used compressed air from a short, rubber-tipped air gun. I placed the air gun tip under the edge of the grip and pulled the trigger. The grips slid on easily and by blowing the air under the grip, I was easily able to adjust the grip position. The hair spray dried quickly (It is 103 degrees here today.) I only bought one set. Put the 22mm on the clutch side and the 24mm on the throttle tube side. There is no need to buy two sets!

I've got to say, this is one of the easiest grip swaps I have ever done. They're snug and I don't think there will be any need for safety wiring. I tested the heated grips and all is good.

As promised: I bought a couple of O-Rings 28ID x 5mm and put them onto the grips. Feels much better for me (with my fat fingers) than the spongy grip puppies, and the results IMHO are better to look at as well.
Installation is 5 minutes per side. Just roll on the o rings one after the other until done.

Quick and painless, and at about $10/side not too 'spensive either.

Looks like an old school ribbed Trojan.
Please let us know how this works in rain and/or mud. I'm a little skeptical of this cure. Looks like it will work in dry weather on the interstate. If you're going to ride off road or in some inclement weather, you're going to need some grips.

Then again, I've been wrong before. Just ask my wife!

Not sure where the difference would be ... Rubber OEM grips, rubber o-rings. But I grant you due to the different mixes of rubber there COULD be a difference. Should I perceive a difference I will report back in.
