I've been fighting with the purchase of a spot 2 for a while, many places we travel off-road have cell service these days. But, it only takes once without it or a dead phone to screw things up. One unit on the way!

FYI,

Had a Spot and they are a fine device. No issues with the product.

But.

At about the 11 month mark, they "auto renew" you for a second year, uhhh, without ASKING YOU first.

I hate seeing crap like that on my credit card statement..... I had intended to drop the service at the one year mark ( i lost my job), and I was watching for it on a calender, and was going to call them. Then at 11 months, they auto renewed it and it was like pulling teeth to get out of the next's years contract, but I did.

Again, the product is great, and the service is great, I just disagree with that type of approach to "retain customers" without asking them first.

I had nearly all the services stacked on my service that they offered, as I typically travel alone, so I was shocked when I saw the charge. FYI, if you put things like this on a Debit Card or Check card, talk to your bank, you DONT have the "reverse charge" protection that you THINK YOU HAVE. Your money pretty much is gone and you may not be able to reverse or contest the charge.

I'm not a fan of negative billing either but I was pleased when I got an email from them one month prior to the end of my billing cycle reminding me that it will renew unless I decided to cancel it.

Just picked one up thanks to this thread! You get commission...

Best Buy doesn't carry them in stock, West Marine does and they price match. Wife is picking it up now while out on her errands.

Just emailed her the link from Best Buy showing $49 to her iPhone, at checkout they said to just pull up the link and she gets it for that price. Thanks guys for the heads up

I agree... However, I don't really care about that too much. For me, anyway, I'm buying it for #1 Emergency's, and #2 for the gps tracking (for my family to be able to track me). Not too interested in all the bells & whistles (in fact, not too fond of the Spot Connect and could give a rats-ass about Facebook, Flicker, Twitter, etc. etc. etc.).

I may be wrong, and I may kick myself for NOT waiting, but for $50 (plus the cost of monthly service), a Spot 2 should do me just fine...

And thanks to the ADV community for getting the word out there on this one!
