I owned a M2 for 11 years and enjoyed everything and more that people rave about when it comes to an XR1200. It was even a great touring rig with a set of soft bags, buell tank bag I still use today, and all that fuel.

Nah...

The XR bashers have just gotten tired of beating this dead horse .

The bike doesn't look like it's selling well at all... I'll be very surprised if makes another 2 years - already seeing HD discontinuing accessories for the bike. While I enjoy riding mine, it sure ain't been the most reliable thing and both the hardcore HD folks and Japanese/Euro performance folks wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft. pole.

Hey, I thought they were Harley bashers that just happen to be bashing a XR? There is a sub cat called XR bashers? I had no idea.

I have to give someone at HD credit...they were able to get press for the Iron 883 and XR1200 when no one would touch sportsters previously. Wasn't the 883 a girl's bike?

Some of those comments about relibility are exactly what 'plauged' Buell in the early days and were often over blown. I had good luck with my M2 and will remember all those trouble free years it gave me. Very simple bike that I would love to see more of a trend...no ABS, no complicated anything, easy to work on, just plain works.

Well, that's what I thought.... but I've had a number of "initial quality" problems that resulting in oil leaks like this and this and this, and several other issues.

Fortunately, nothing really major, or that has stranded me, just a bunch of PITA stuff. But otherwise it is a very simple bike to work on, and I hope all the initial quality stuff is finally resolved. I do all my own work on the bike, including changing tires...

It is a fun bike to ride..... no question.

I had a valve guide seal leak under warranty. I was able to get the dealer to cover it without issue, but made sure they used James gaskets and not the crap stock paper ones. Some sportsters had base gasket leaks like yours...again, James gaskets.

You will have to buy the gaskets, but HD should cover the labor (if you have a good dealer).

I dunno why there's so much hate on the XR1200, all it is is a modified Sportster. I dunno why people expect it to compete with italian sport bikes. Sure the price is similar, but that's about it.

I would be seriously considering one if they still made the orange color.

What exhaust is that? It does not look like the Vance & Hines.

This is the way I plan to go: http://www.vanceandhines.com/product...212-widow.html

Looks like a Supertrapp exhast, and looks...well, looks like I'm not sure if I like it, and I normally like Supertrapps.

Easy enough to swap out the tank cover and rear fender, I don't know if it would be cheap or not.

Yea, its Supertrapp exhaust and it's not my favorite looking either... but it came with the bike, weighs 23lbs less then stock, sounds mean, and has been proven to put the most HP down (albeit a slight loss of torque, but this bike has plenty anyway).

If I were to buy exhaust, I'd probably stick to a nice looking 2-1.. probably Remus. I'll trade with anyone who has it :P

But I think my first mod will be the suspension. Then some appearance stuff. These bikes look pretty mean with a few bolt-on mods.
