So, I'm standing at the counter, waiting to make my purchase, when an oddly-out-of-place word floats over from the next checkstand, and Bumps me in the ear.

At first, I think I have misheard, and so dismiss it. But, then it comes again, "Is it organic?"

Huh?

The guy is looking at a bottle of booze, and is actually asking whether it is organic.

I look around to see whether maybe I had taken a wrong turn, and had ended up in Starbucks- but no, that's cheap whiskey in my hand, not chai tea. I am indeed in a liquor store, and some guy is asking for organic spirits.

He isn't even wearing bicycle shorts. He's just standing there in regular clothes, looking like a real person, but asking "Is it organic?"

My mind reels: Organic? Organic? Are you kidding me? It's red eye, man. What the hell do you mean "Is it organic?"

To the cashier I say, "Organic hooch, I never thought I'd hear that."

The guy looks at me as though he doesn't know whether to laugh, or flip me off. I am equally in doubt. We exchange uncertain smiles, and I walk out the door.

Peterman, help me out here. We need one of your pithy observations.

Is this the end? Should we pack it in? cash out? head out of town before it all blows up? Is all hope lost?

And, come to think of it, do you have to know tai chi to drink chai tea? and, who really cares about either one?

Organic booze...WTF? Had to google that one...

Certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, organic alcohol must use production methods without residues that can potentially pollute air, soil, and water. This means that organic alcohol is produced from products free of pesticides and fertilizers, chemicals that, when ingested frequently, can potentially increase the risk of cancer other health risks[1].

According to Dr. Adolfo Murillo, President and CEO of organic tequila producer Tequila Alquima, chemicals used to speed up alcohol production can leave salts and heavy metals that might make it through to the final product. Organic producers like Murillo try to eliminate these chemicals at all stages, from the field to fermentation and bottling. Murillo believes that because organic alcohols lack such compounds, drinkers will tend to feel diminished hangovers. Though more research is needed to measure the effect organic booze can have on reducing hangovers, some evidence suggests gulping down a cocktail free of added chemicals could leave a lighter sting the morning after.

Geez, I need some fresh air...anybody know where I can get some Organic Air?

Hay, anytime!

I have a neighbor that's growing organic grapes so that he can make organic wine. Does it mean that he cares about the environment? Not at all, for "some" it's all about getting a couple more bucks!

My best story is this; A huge yellow H2 Hummer pulls up in front of our fruit stand, a woman opens the door, climbs down out of this monster (leaving it running) walks over and asks if our fruit is organic. After telling her that "no we are not" but we implement a very strict IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program she goes off on a tangent about how I was destroying the environment and then storms off in her H2!!! Now, if she had rode up from Portland on her bicycle I just might not have been laughing as hard... Yes, I think we lost her as a customer!

Now to defend organics just a little, there are people out there doing it right and coming up with some great ideas. When they do, we work them into our operation as much as possible.

There, that's my rant for the day!

BUMP!!!

But, I thought booze was supposed to bad for you.

"May I help you, sir?"

"Yeah, I'm looking for some organic cigarettes."
