XR400 Four - Skunkworks Special

Yep that’s right I’m building me a little 4 cylinder adventure bike.

I am organising a fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Association of NSW called:

Scrapheap Adventure Ride 2010

Raising Money for Down Syndrome Association of NSW

Ride to: Wanaaring

When: Easter Saturday - April 3, 2010

Rules:
Have to buy a Bike for less than $1000.00.
Can be any road registered motorcycle.
You are allowed to spend additional sums on the bike to make it run and roadworthy, all machines participating must be registered.
It costs $100.00 to enter paid directly to DSANSW.
You can raise additional funds through sponsorship of your ride.
(Pay cents per Kilometer)

Above is the donor bike.

A mate, Shane, give me this little beauty for $0.00. Thanks Buddy

I want to splice on a XR front end, wheel and swing arm rear wheel.
Still wondering what fuel tank, seat and guards to run. Need to build it as cheap as possible. I will not be butchering this bike as will be able to return it to CB400 Four at the end if I wanted too.

When I first looked at it, it is very small. And quite light. I will keep posting as I progress.

I had an old KTM muffer I had laying around in the garage

and some old KTM Tank Seat and Guard. Bars will be a bit hard to turn.

Looks too modern and losing that classic look. Let try a R80G/S Single seat??

There will be lots of trying and looking and binning.

I have a set of alloy Krauser pannier and topbox frames somewhere in the BMW parts in the shed and will probably use them with plastic gerrycan panniers. Plus a home made topbox.

OldDog is building up and old TS250 which is below and tHEtREV is coming with his RZ350 Dirtbike.

So if anyone has some old XR bits I would greatly appreciate your assistance

The idea is to get as many old bikes out of shed and back on the road for a bit of fun and a good cause.

Been doing some measuring around the rear end.

Anyone have a XR who can measure the swing arm for me?

The width of the swing arm at the pivot is 200mm.

The 400's swingarm length is around 450mm, how long is an XR swing arm?

Noticed the Redline on this bike is 10,000rpm

This is going to get interesting.

I might just start looking around for a banger.

Pezz, man, yer not helping..... I want so badly to stuff a 500cc ninja mill into my KLR650....but my wife would kill me. I do have an XR250 frame sans engine....think a ninja 500 engine would make an old XR scoot?

Na mate but you should smell the stale fuel in the tank . . .

Some intersting CB400 Four Facts apart from the 10,000 Red Line
  • 408cc's 51mm bore and 50mm stroke
  • 4 x 20mm Piston valve Carburetors
  • Maximum power 37HP @ 8500rpm
  • 6 speed gearbox
  • Dry weight 170kgs.
The dry weight should come down a a few kg's

I think I am going to be dead in the water with that one :(

Besides I have only just got in roadworthy condition, and rideable.

Oh well.

Seems everyone will love you on that bike, the Italian bystanders turned off his fuel tap and put the sidestand down for him.
