Pretty remote and all dirt roads to get there...edge of the Cimarron National Grassland.

I'll have to grab the North West corner :)

Little (concrete) house on the prairie.....

this spring i caught a glimpse of a funky building late one afternoon out on the pawnee. for part of todays ride i came back to have a closer look......

started the day with some typical grassland two track. check out the brilliant colorado fall colors! the muted grays! the dusty tans! the faded greens! autumn in the 'other' colorado......

don't ride the pawnee grassland if you're bothered by barbed wire gates- here's 2 within 50 feet of each other. yeah, i had to go through both, one of them twice.....

here's the little building, tucked away in the middle of nowhere. once i got closer i realized even the roof was concrete (?!).

added a little extra interest to another uncrowded ride on the 'great plains'......

Do landowners have a problem with folks riding thru,,, or is it a case of 'what they don't know...'???
Being from the east, I don't know what is accepted out there.
Thanks!

no, no, all perfectly legal! i meant 'bothered' by the inconvenience! much of the public land (forest service, bureau of land management) in the west is leased to ranchers for grazing. in this case the pawnee national grassland is actually managed by the forest service (!). many fences are there to keep cattle in their allotted areas at their allotted times on that public land and don't reflect private property boundaries. the pawnee is quite the bizarre patchwork of public and private, you definitely want to have a map.... and close those gates!

OK, I guess with the fences I thought it was private land. Being bothered by closing a few gates seems like a small price to pay for the privilege to ride sooo much territory though. Us here in the east would like to have a few gates we COULD open and go thru vs gates with locks all over the place.
How do you keep track of what's private and what's public/gov't land that you are allowed on? Signs posted, maps?
Sorry for talking, and not posting any pics, I'll shut up now and just enjoy the photos!

i kid about the gates- good things always wait on the other side! of course they're not your typical white picket fence gate either, barbed wire with a tight loop (usually strung by a burly rancher) over a post that has to loop over another post with 3 strands of barbed wire attached to it. push as hard as you can (don't snag that megabuck ds jacket!) and get that thing looped over again when you pass through.....

as far as open roads/trails go, they are generally posted with fiberglass-like markers. they will have icons showing the road number and which modes of travel are allowed. fwiw a picture of a motorcycle means 'dirt bike' and not plated ds bike though. a ds bike is allowed on roads with the 'jeep' or 'car' icons.

the markers are typically freestanding......

they are also often driven over and flattened to a splintered stub or shot to hell, so it helps to have a map. forest service maps are color coded as to the land status.......

and now you know!

sorry about the fuzzy pics, i cropped the heck out of this one to get the detail shots......

Van Metre Rd, Jones County, SD

Just got back from the Great Plains a few weeks ago. I won't waste your time describing the beauty of the desolation and solitude there because words fail. This is Van Metre Road in Jones County, SD just north of Murdo.
