Thanks Lornce.!!!
I suspect they would not allow such realistic footage in today's super nanny climate.

Thumb See you Sunday then...

Three alarms woke me, two electronic, the other delightfully organic

I was up and, after a cup of hot sweet milkless tea, off on the road. It being early Sunday I tried to keep the noise to a reasonable minimum whilst leaving the quiet little townshit of Nailsburgh, which meant running thru/ough the gears rather than hitting medium-hi (loud) revs in 2nd, which I prefer. And it's better if I do, because the current carburation setting benefits from the bike being warmed thoroughly. It starts off by popping back thru/ough the left carb a bit, feeling lumpy, and not ticking over without a tickle of throttle, even on the choke. It's previously been adjusted by 'a (THE) Dave who knows' to just gently tick over after 30 thorough miles: when used properly (thrashed) it's lovely, and before now it's been happy, but recently it's started to feel lumpy and out of sync as tho/ough the cylinders are arguing, especially since I added five more plates to the Supertrapp end caps... This reduces exhaust back pressure as well as doubling the exhaust volume Also the morning dew had got into the electrics and to start with the throttle response was a bit jittery, misfiring at higher revs. And so, to overcome the bikes stuttering, and to leave a bit of space for those almost inevitable 'drank too much last night' Sunday morning drivers I pootled out of town and thru/ough the first couple of villages unusually quietly, at low revs in third or fourth so as not to enrage all the middle managers there resident, the muling puking shits. This lumpiness also meant I decided to take the least direct trunk route rather than cutting across country, in case I was at some point in need of a little roadside assistance - is it the carbs? (yes), is there an oil feed problem that'll seize a bearing on me?, is there a short?, or is it that I still haven't had the wheels balanced since I fitted the tyre/ires myself - either way it wasn't smooth, or at least as smooth as it can be given that it's a big shaky lump...

Once out into the open countryside I had got heat into the engine and it stopped popping a bit, stopped stuttering once I'd warmed off the dew from the electrics, and the next issue at hand was my own warmth. It was generally dry and sunny, but diluted as they were by passing thru/ough the heavy cloud of smug outrage that hangs above this sorry little hamlet of ingrained ignorance & self righteousness, the enfeebled solar rays could barely warm the morning air, and so I began to find myself in need of the extra layer I'd packed in my tank bag.

Packing is always something I do two or so days before an outing. If I've got a gig I tend to prefer to have all the required kit piled up and ready far too far before the off. It's something I've always done, but as I move further towards my stated aim of eradicating the capability of functional memory I find it increasingly beneficial to add things to a pile at the moment I think of them, they're bound to have slipped my memory before the end of the next thought. But anyway I've always preferred to cover all eventualities, as you can guarantee that when you get to the country/shitty little venue you're utterly bound to need that one adaptor to connect into the projection system, or to facilitate an audio feed back to the stage for the purposes of modulation & manipulation. Too often I've been told that what I'm asking for is a specialist lead by some knowledge-deficient aspirant technician hoiked in to cover the job because the last guy started asking for pay, or at the very least expenses. You see that's what the entertainment industry generally consists of: ignorant aspirants prepared to do it for nothing just so they can say they're in THE BIZ. But then again I guess it says something about my position that I am still coming into contact with these wan-arr-bees? Yes, I am under no illusions as to my place. That's too depressing to think about, so instead lets return to the bit where I was stopping on the way to put on an extra jacket.

I put on an extra jacket.

By way of more relevant illustration, today I was fortuitously sent the picture pictured below. Being the resplendent fool I am I took along my own photographer to record the event, and here he has captured the very moment I was amused to come across the unexpected sight of his Dad & Mum at a motor-sport event, tho/ough I guess he was going for the pink mini? We'd just come off a post visit at Copse (see Pt.2) & were heading back for a pits tour.

The remainder of the journey was comfortable, though the bike was still running lumpy, but then I was there, and being directed by the gate off to the car-park. In the tenor of total frankness I must at this time admit to a vanity felt when reporting I had to report to the Paddock Bar to report for Marshals Signing On or I'd be reported. Oh how sorry is my existence when such a thing gives me even the slightest of thrills, but there you are, I’m not too proud to admit it. And so I got to drive over the bridge that most people aren't allowed to drive over, turn left at the roundabout that most people aren't allowed to turn left at, drive over the other bridge most people aren't allowed to drive over, turn left at the other roundabout that most people aren't allowed to turn left at and park up by a little sports car behind the Paddock Bar. It being 7.45 (8.30 start) I oriented myself as to where I'd be signing on & retired to the adjoining Paddock Cafe for the somewhat traditional greeeezy breakfast, naturally slightly overpriced, but welcome nonetheless. Sausages were a little high-volume-production-herby, but there was bacon & greeeeez.

At the appointed assembly time of 8.15 I wandered back to meet up with my little group of three other aspirant Marshals, and waited for the Team Leader to present, which they did at the agreed time with a chirpy welcoming manner. We signed on (I read the terms) and the briefing & tour began. Throughout the morning it was well delivered & informative and consisted of:

Don’t get killed: See that thing there, it could kill you. Don’t get killed. Look after yourself, your team, and then the driver. Identify & monitor hazards, and don't get killed by them.

Race Control: TV from points around the circuit. Messages coming in from Marshalling points regarding various infractions, including all four wheels outside track confines/white line. Cough. See below. Cough.

SV indicates a number that's one higher than the number of fux he gives for integrity now.

When Vettel collided with Kubica In Australia '09 he was frank & honest with the media & Stewards about his actions, but this was rewarded with a hefty fine & condemnation. To me it seems he's now learnt that it's not a sport any longer, as they all do somewhen, and so you should say what is to your advantage, not what is right. Schumi knew it in '94, & '97, Alonso realised it at Monza one year, they all do at some point.

Timing: Transponders on each vehicle @ cables in the ground, but a hand scribed chart as backup

Assembly Area/Incident vehicle: Assemble in grid order. Don’t get killed. Check for Scrutineers stickers on vehicle & helmet. The latter, placed by the left ear, leaves ‘void’ when removed. Incident vehicle with cutting tools etc., & some medical coverage. Fire tender pick-up truck with foam & water tanks. How not to deal with a fire, specifically referring to:
