Well, Chipprob, that's some nice work there. Next winter you have to black out the rims and forks then you'll be done. I like the looks of that K60 on the rear there--looks like a super deep tread.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm excited to try the K60's for a bit. Since I do have a complete second set of rims that is exactly the plan to rebuild them in black. My spare front is damaged, so I'm going go with 21" for that set.

Now that it is together my mechanic thought it would be a good idea to have a spare final drive. So i am watching for one and swing arm to powder coat, would be a nice finishing touch.

Replacing the bearing and seal is simple, no need for a spare FD (and a second-hand one might need a bearing anyway).

Powder coating the final drive unit would be difficult as there are a lot of surfaces that need to be kept free of the coating.

Paint it.

Nice

SWEET BIKE! Next to that Williams paint job I think black is ,for me, the best looking. Black on black just looks awesome as hell.

I'm loving how the 1150's look, I thought I wanted a 1200, after stumbling on this thread you guys changed my mind. I prefer to work on my own stuff, it's an escape for me, a sense of pride too, knowing that I can keep my equipment running without spending a fortune.

My wife keeps bugging me to get a touring bike, I said, "It is a touring bike, for any damn place you can think of to go!"

@ A. T. T-W, I LOVE what you have done with the bike.

I guess the gearbox and shaft housing can be powdercoated, and you are right about the FD, it is best to paint it, only if not dismantled and then powdercoated...

Dan.

Thanks. It's a 2004 bike that I've owned from new.

The problem with powder-coating the FD (even when disassembled) is that there are surfaces that need to be free of the coating to ensure the correct tolerances. Like the original finish, that would have to be removed and that's what leads to corrosion: cutting back the coating leaves an edge where moisture creeps under the coating and works its evil unseen until it breaks-out.

That's why the fork bridges burst-out into scabs of oxidisation (when the original one on my bike was replaced under warranty, I took the replacement, stripped it and painted it before it was fitted). It has never suffered the usual corrosion as a result.
