Attention Austin TX ADV's-need advise
Hello ADV's in Austin,
I am coming to Austin in November for the F1 grand prix and need some local knowledge on a good place to stay, hotel, b&b anything really. Not too expensive but no too cheap either. There will be 4 of us, two couples. My wife and I are flying in from Australia to Dallas and driving down to Austin and meeting our US friends there. Any info from is much appreciated, looking forward to my first visit to Austin. Cheers. Glen. |

Nothing will be cheap. Try and stay downtown, that way, you can take advantage of the public transportation out to the track and back, and then party on 6th Street and walk to your hotel room.

As far as places to stay and prices, being in Austin I never need a hotel so I don't really know the names of the ones downtown. Prices were high last year and I've heard that travel agents are actually pointing people to surrounding towns instead of Austin because the hotels raised their rates so much. So I'm wondering if there will be some reduction. Austin gets enough visitors that all the main chain hotels downtown are fairly nice. Using Google to get the names of the hotels then check the online sites of each for rates. Plus check Priceline and other discount travel sites. I'm betting they won't have anything discounted for the weekend though. Nightlife is definitely centered on Sixth St., east of Congress Avenue. Sorry I can't help too much. Hopefully some of the other Texas types that came into town for the F1 last year can chime in with their experiences.

Thanks guys,
we are searching around at the moment. Obviously not going to be cheap, but we will try stay downtown somewhere. After all that is where the after hours "action" is. We have our tickets so a place to stay really all we need. Appreciate the info. Cheers. G. |

"Too expensive" and "too cheap" could mean a wide range of prices. I stayed at the Mansion and Judge's Hill when I rode in for the MotoGP. It was one of only two hotels within 5 miles of downtown available on late notice. It was $350/night, after taxes...but the other hotel was $650/night so the Mansion suddenly became the "cheap" hotel haha.
It was a very nice hotel. They have 2 Cadillacs to shuttle you downtown, best staff I've ever encountered at a hotel and my girlfriend loved the "charm". Parking is a small parking garage and great breakfast tacos a block away. Be prepared for crazy traffic. Austin does not have enough highways for the population size, let alone big events. I'm still not sure how they don't have anything running east/west, inner loop or something. No words can describe the post-race traffic (said the guy who lives in Houston). We waited 1 1/2 hours after the race to leave would have sat in 3+ hours of traffic if we weren't on the giant dirtbike. I can't wait to see how bad it is after F1. |

Hotel San Jose and the Austin Motel are both nice. Austin Motel is quirky but cool, just like Austin. Be sure to check out South Congress area too. That is where Austin Motel is. Lots of cool places to eat and drink. Check out TX BBQ while there. Salt Lick about 20 miles out of town is one of my favorites. Franklins in town is rated #1 in Texas and that is saying alot. Expect BIG lines and waits. But worth it.
Austin traffic is bad, as the fastest growing city in the USA, it is a busy place at times. Everybody has discovered that Austin and Texas is cool so they all are moving there. It shows. I live SW of Ft. Worth,TX , which is right on the way to Austin via the more scenic roads to Austin. It is called Granbury and is a classic small Texas town, give me a PM and I will take you for TX BBQ in our area. Has a great Courthouse and Town Square that was voted the best in Texas, well worth seeing. Even have plenty of room at our house along the Brazos River if you need a free place to stay. TEXAS Hospitiality. We have Aussie friends so we always enjoy friends from down under. |

If I was in Austin, I would let you stay on my couch. But I am in Houston, about 120 miles east.
Austin FFs need to step up and welcome our visiting Roo fucker.

Yes someone needs to offer this Aussie a FREE place to stay in Austin. He is coming a long way to enjoy the F1 Race. And to enjoy your fine city.

The traffic to and from COTA can suck balls.
When I do motogp again I'm going for a really close motel. MotoGP did not have shuttle to and form Austin. Bastards

Rent a RV as there is a very close place to put them at the track. Next time I will bring my Airstream and stay right there. So much for over priced lodging in Austin.
