Good site, I have printed that out and bookmarked it.

All I have is a scan from a guy in England that I copied and printed, let me see if I can get it and down load it and make it better. It is hard to read.

Spent some time sticking the multi-meter probes up the XT's coil's ass today. If not before, I am pretty sure now the coil is funky. The wiring diagram is not much help because it does not show the internal connections but I found a statement that the ignition coil side is not supposed to go to ground which would make sense in a way. But.... If that is so, then the rest of the diagram does not, as least according to what I can sorta see on the wiring diagram. Going to squint at it some more but even if I do not understand it, maybe the new coil will fix the problem.

If aircraft magnetos were wired like Yamaha does it, airplanes would be falling from the skies like dead Armadillos... Simple & safe it ain't...... Grrrrrrrrrrr

I think you are supposed to try to kick start it 100 times as a test of the coil integrity.

a point type ignition wont have that sort of a pickup I dont think.

BUT, those things are fairly easy to test.

put a meter on the wires coming out of it, and swipe a magnet past it, it should show a swell in voltage.

also, set meter to resistance, usually anything from 300-800 ohms is a good pickup coil, anything thats open ( infinite ohms) or short ( 0 ohms) will be a bad coil.

OK Gus,

I finally had a few minutes here at work ( big monitor) to blow up your schematic and check that out.

the breaker points sort of are in parrallell with the magneto coil generator.

It looks as if the points stay closed and ground that magneto output most of the time, then the eccentric opens the points, and allows the magneato to saturate the ignition coil, then close again and collapse the field to induce that spark magic

I guess you need to verify magneeto output with the points OPEN, or simply verify you have some AC voltage going TO the ignition coil when you kick the engine over. simple easy test, look for a few hundred volts AC, with some rythym as you roll the engine over. ( take the plug out, make it easy on you)

if you have those timed pulses of AC, then start looking at the ignition coil.

Thanks for that.... it makes more sense than anything else I can think of. I hope my new coil show up soon.
