40 degrees when I left Roanoke, VA this morning. Unfortunately the roads remained wet and the temp dropped as my trip progressed. One rather wiggly bridge crossing. According to weather.com, it was supposed to be 40-ish the whole 150 mile trip. Unfortunately most of it turned out to be right near 32.

New tag:

Every town has a memorial to war, or veterans of wars, or war dead.

Those are easy to find. Instead, show us a memorial to other brave americans. Could be historical marker, if commemorating the death of an individual or group of individuals (but not grave marker).

I don't agree that historical markers are entirely different, however this one doesn't commemorate the rebels dying in valor or heroics, rather they ran away and hid. (Reminds me of Bravely Brave Sir Robin from the Holy Grail.)

Also, this one was military in nature, and the category clearly excluded war related memorials.

Ok, here's some suggestions:

Law Enforcement; Firefighters; Miner's; Victims of Crime, Fire, or Natural Disaster; Civil Rights Heroes; Those who died expanding our frontiers (land, sea, or space).

You get the idea.

Like this one: But if you go for this one, bring plenty of food. Or at least bring a friend.

The social meanings of monuments are rarely fixed and certain and are frequently 'contested' by different social groups. They are a structure given significance by history and situation.

Doesnt the original poster say historical markers are ok? ( as long as not war related)

IMHO 2 things wrong with the Cheney marker, 1 No one died. 2 Its a war marker thing.

Just my 2cents

This was the tag

And a beaut!

Cheney Clow looks like he's fitting the description

But the marker didn't commenorate his death, it commemorated a retreat in (or approaching) wartime. So 3 things wrong: War related, No death, Not brave due to running away. Maybe 4 if you consider a tory not American.

I admit I DID say historical markers COULD count, and was specifically thinking of ones I pass occassionally that recount:
- Indian Massacres
- Flood Deaths
