I'm ashamed to have to ask that question since I grew up and was riding enduros when those bikes were still almost new.
No common heritage other than their both being German. Those 'Old Europeans', like their Alabama counterparts, are keen on cross polination. The Hercules, which you may remember from the same period and from the same company, Fichtel und Sachs (sp?) also sported a radial head, tho less pronounced than that one.

You may recall too that the sachs engine appeared in the 100 & 125 Pentons, which were KTM's in drag. Lots of other bikes too.

Maybe they all got the idea from Zundapp -- a motorcycle whose name is similar to the noise that RTW doug makes when he thinks nobody will hear.

BTW, that Sachs engine (in the DKW) looks expertly assembled. I'll bet whoever put it together is what the cute little hotties these days call a boy toy.

Yes, halmc himself, the great rotund one, fixed the motor for me last summer while I was travelling, & he wanted a project to tinker on (clutch shaft was broken) I havent fired it up yet, so I cant comment on the workmanship inside, but if theres ever a job opening as a turd polisher, he'd be perfect. the outside of the motor looks like new, or better

A polished turd is still a turd. As a polisher of sundry Harlies, the notion should be in your signature line.

Im in germany, in the only town named for a hot dog. jet lag sucks.
but not as bad as US customs, who every year impose new rules, but dont bother to tell anyone. of course this is US Customs in atlanta, which shouldnt surprise me.
so the bike, as usual. is delayed, hopefully be here by friday

on previous comments/questions...

yes on the spot tracker, I will post a link on the RR, when I get started on it.

DKW is a 72 I think.

thats not a pistol, as concealed carry means concealed.

oops, no wait. guns are bad. no one should own guns.
except the government, & the police, who will keep us safe.
yeah, thats what I meant.

and I will be dickin around in my garage in bulgaria some while Im there, but the RR will be in RRs

now, what to see in frankfurt?

Doug

You're underway!

Well, safe riding and a grand adventure. Those of us with lesser sense of adventure, and a greater sense of hygene will watch from afar.

When you get to each border crossing, ask the guards where to get a concealed weapon permit.

That should increase the excitement of your trip.

In all seriousness, I hope you have a safe and rewarding adventure, and that you keep your fans -- including me -- in the loop as time and circumstances permit.

Godspeed, my friend.
