I went to the AMCA meet in Oley PA this weekend.

I was really sort of looking for a Sunbeam S7 or a Nimbus, and also went just to hang out with friends. I found a Sunbeam, but was a bit overpriced IMO, I made an offer, he said no. Oh well.....

BUT, I did find this, and fell in love with it. 1929 Harley JD, that had been 'slightly' customized. Perfect for the next Cannonball, so we made a deal, & I rolled it over to my friend Dales trailer. (I flew up due to gas costs & time, but have arranged one of my 'cycle relays' that will have it here next weekend)
Dale has Wheels thru Time museum in NC. If you havent been, you need to go. Awesome collection of stuff. I met him 20? years ago when he had a HD stealership in IL, & a nice collection of old stuff in the garage outback.
He has alot more now

Anyhow, we were looking at it, & another guy was there, & it turns out the bike was made by Hank the Hermit, in Weymouth Mass, probably in the 50s or 60s.

Dale has one of Hanks customs in the museum.

The other guy, Peter, knew Hank, & has alot of his old parts, & will try to find pictures of this bike for me.

Basically, it started life as a 29 JD. Motor looks great, & has the 29 only cylinders. The front end is from a 31-32? VL, with the original tool box & horn on the front. The frame backbone has been modified, so instead of the curve like a stock JD has, this one has more of a 36 & later knuckle look, with a straight backbone. And its been modified for knuckle tanks & dash. JD's have the oil tank in part of the gas tank like an Indian, but this has a rear mounted HD tank. The 'hollywood' bars (with crossbar) are original, but the base was cut, & they were rotated back, to sit lower, sort of like an early cafe racer. They still have the original swirl blue accessory grips on them.
a rare expensive item.
Theres alot of rare & expensive stuff on it, the more we looked, the more we saw. the headlight is HD, but the glass lens is early 30s indian.
original HD plugs, with the insulator cones made from bakelite.
some rare linkert carb that guys were drooling over.
the original single row JD primary chain & clutch has been replaced with the VL style 2 row, much stronger. 16" tires instead of 18". the tires are allstates, & probably 60 years old. VL front hub, JD rear hub.
I really love the muffler. its handmade. a long tapered megaphone with a rocket end welded on, then chromed.
handmade tank shifter gate to fit the knuck tanks, & chromed.
etc...etc...
I think with some gas, a battery & a coil, it will run.
I will find out when it gets here.
it looks like the sheet metal was removed to get painted, & then it never got put back on. no idea how many years its been sitting.

So I need a set of knuckle tanks. Anyone here holding some?

and a rear fender.

If I can get pics, I'll try to put it back just like it was built. If not, then I'll do it period correct as a bobber.

it was really cool to learn who built it. Hank died almost 20 years ago, but I'll make him proud by fixin it up & riding the wheels off of it.

heres some more pics....

this is one of Dales stock JD's, just so you can see how the frame & other stuff was modified

I'd like to pick your brain if possible.

I found these old family photos a few years back. (I figured there was a "Biker in the Blood" thing going on...)

I've always wondered what model / year this bike is?...This is my Uncle Fred Fitzgerald. He passed away in 1950 at 28 yrs. old..... was my Mom's twin brother..

If anyone can I.D. this thing, I figure you can. Thanks in advance!

He and his buddy Al were bear hunting in the Beartooth Mountains. Early Adventure Riders.

His Buddy Al Heram:

My older Brother has his bolt action rifle which was one of those leaning against the tree.

Al must have been a better camp cook.

Fred and his buddies. Somewhere in Eastern Montana. Probably in the mid to late 40's.

I think Fred was on a 1940 Knucklehead.
Looks like it had the 'deluxe solo trim package' which was a bunch of chrome doodads. It also has the cool front rim cover, that was sort of a clamshell hubcap looking thing (both HD's in the pic have them) and I really like his muffler.

The other HD looks to be a 46, and the Indian looks like a 46 also.
