This first one is the Border Guards. You need a permit to travel through this region. Initially we didn't have one, and these guys stopped us and asked us for our permits. It was looking like we had a problem on our hands. But their interest soon turned to the motorcycles, and after a few minutes playing with the bikes, we were free to go, provided we stopped in at the Border HQ and got a permit for the ongoing section ... which we did!

In fact not only did the fine fellows waive the penalty we deserved, but they then gave us 20 litres of fuel ... since the fuel station was totally empty.

Looks like you've been up and down in altitude. Great photos. My favorite is the frozen lake....at what altitudes are you riding?

The lake was just under 2400 metres (8000 feet). We camped that night about 2500 metres, exactly where we took that foto (foreground is illuminated by headlights). It was a very cold night that night, well below freezing, and I had a wet sleeping bag. Not a joyous combination

Here is a profile of our track from Koch Agach to the asphalt near Solchur on my map (Khandagayty on other maps like Google Maps).

At every pass is a series of coloured cloth strips and offerings - money, cigarettes, vodka, you name it. Its a buddhist thing, and like their Mongolian and Buryat neighbors, the Tuvans are buddhist.

Almost back to Asphalt now - only 80km to go and we were on the Tuvan equivalent of an 8 lane motorway, but rear pannier frame on Tony's bike collapses.

Serves him right for using metal boxes.
