Dual plugging 1981 R80 GG/S.

Does anybody know where and how to locate the second coil in a sanitary manner on a 1981 R80 G/S? It has the regular 4.5 gal tank.

Oh I imagine there is a place under the maintube somewhere


I gotta ask....what is the purpose of Dp an 800 GS? Added complexity. no real practical use. Unless done some other silly things that somehow require dp. It has always seemed like gift wrapping the proverbial dead beaver.

I agree. Its a benefit on the bigger Airheads that seem to ping on anything but premium, but the little guys probably don't need it.

I had my heads redone at San Jose BMW. Since they had the heads I was sort of planning ahead to eventually bump up to 1000cc jugs per their reccomendation. I now wish I hadn't done it because they told me their kit came with everthing I needed. As it turned out they made a mistake and didn't have a kit for my bike, so now I have extra holes in my head and no way to mount the extra coil. I've been waiting for over a year for Chris to get back to me with a proper bracket. He is waiting for a 1981 G/S to come in so he can look at it and figure it out.

Down 'ere it is done for economy .. so you can do the canning with 5 litres less fuel.

The original coil sits to the right front side of the main tube, behind that are the ignition black box, Voltage regulator, blinker relay, starter relay. Behind that you should be able to squish in a small coil. Putting a coil under the main tube .. well there is not that much space there and you make servicing that much more complex, you have to remove it to change the air filter for instance.

You do know about reducing the timing advance range?

Calling an 800 GS a dead beaver is like calling a guzzie a spaghetti bm.

Not familiar with the term? It is similar to "guilding the lily". Doing something for no real purpose. Not about the bike per se...but about piling stuff on that serves no real purpose. In the end tho, it is your bike...do what you will.

Down 'ere most are interested in economy. At least from a $ point of view. Some however look at carrying 5 litres less of fuel 1000 kms up and down sand hills as very functional and of tremendous benefit in the longer term.

As the second spark means you have (for a short period) a second flame front so you get a faster burn ... so you will need less advance ... and less range of advance .. so you reduce the travel on the advance weights ... that is what I recall from various discussions other people were having some time ago. As I have not done it I don't have the actual figures. Just vague recollections. Talk to your hole provider, they should be able to give you the info on timing.
