As mentioned in this thread, wagons are great with the handling and fuel economy of a car and the cargo space of an SUV. Why buy a sedan when you can get a wagon?

This is my current car, a 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero 2.3T. 250hp and still getting 30mpg at 70 mph. And those seats are sooooo comfortable.

I recently sold my '90 MB 300 TE. Ran perfect with only 150K miles but I wanted to get a Saab again.

Also had a 2006 9-3 Aero 2.8T. What a blast to drive.

SWMBO has had a couple of nice Sturmwagons over the last few years:

5-speed!

Her new one was only available w/the tiptronic in US-spec...but at least it was still available w/the optional Rally Fun Pack!

Our son agrees...the plate says it all! She got this on Mother's day last year:

I've been saving my pennies (but spending the dollars!) for a Cayman or Boxster Spyder but I have to say, that Panamera shooting brake concept has me thinking!

There is a woman that I know who works at Southern Oregon University. She purchased a Squareback new when she was 16 and is still driving it. She has always had it serviced at the same place and keeps it in perfect condition.

She has kept a record of all service and, when examined over its life, it has turned out to be a remarkably inexpensive car to own.

Who here has owned a Volvo 850?
I'm looking for a used grocery getter, under $10k, room for the dogs and carrying canoes on the roof, and having a manual is non-negotiable. Had my sights set on a Matrix but there's an 850 with 80k a day's drive away for $5k.

Reliability decent, only bad thing I've heard has been the outrageous prices for rear shocks.

Edit -- IS reliability decent?

No manual 850R's, a very very few in the more sedate versions. You'll have more luck finding manuals in the newer V70's, which should be under your $10k price point by now. I sold a 2002 V70 T5 manual for $12.5k in 2007. It was an awesomely stealthy sleeper. No one expects a beige Volvo wagon to be fast.

We had an 850 Turbo for a few years also. Pretty reliable for the most part. Stoopid easy to work on. The rear main seal has a tendency to go, which is pricey to do if you don't have the skills. Otherwise it was pretty routine. If you can bear to drive an auto, you'll be finding decent ones for $2-3k all day long.

I can get a nice white one of these for 900 that has a 460 and only has 56K original miles on it. It belonged to my buddies Mom and she died last year. he wants to sell it. It is in great shape and everything on it works like new, even the hidaway headlights.
