You'll be going with the Outback, then?

I highly recommend one until this year. Why oh why? The Tribeca design experiment FAILS!!!! Ugly and unnecessarily swollen. Stick with the 2005-2009.

I've always liked the looks and the performance of the Mazda Mazdaspeed3. Hot Hatch.

A top five finisher on my "Next Car" list...

From what I've read it is tough to beat for the money.. and reliable.. Wish the styling was a little more under-stated...

A hatchback like this one isn't what I'd call a station wagon though.

It's a good point...

The true station wagon is a rare breed these days... how many true wagons are there left??? Audi A6 wagon.. Mercedes E wagons...

My wife's 9-5 Saab (only decent pic I have) isn't even produced anymore..

Great car...

Now HERE is a good and proper wagon! We were the second owners of this particular wagon and ran across some pics and an article while looking for car pics. I'm so happy it's found a good home! Wish we hadn't sold it!

I'm not trying to be an ass I'm just curious...

So what does make a station wagon then?

Does it have to be body on frame?
Rear wheel drive?

American heritage dictionary say
"an automobile with one or more rows of folding or removable seats behind the driver and no luggage compartment but an area behind the seats into which suitcases, parcels, etc., can be loaded through a tailgate"

Or do you subscribe to the strict, the back door must go vertical or near vertical from the bumper.

Or is a capacity, a "real station wagon" must carry 8 passengers?

I think it is like trying to explain what a 'Dead-head' is....either you are or you are not. Manufacturers have tried to blur the lines....but, I know when I am driving a STATION WAGON versus a hatchback or an SUV. It helps if the namesake WAGON is part of the emblem.

My beast. When the trans finally goes in it, It's getting a 4 speed out of a tow truck.

To me,

Wagon: real cargo behind the rear seats, fixed D pillar, hinges hooked to the D pillar, USUALLY more vertical rear door, USUALLY more flat top rear, flat floor, 3 sets of side windows, etc.

Hatchback: Door over a trunk more than a real cargo area, no real D pillar (usually embeded in the door or mixed with the C), hinges hooked to the C pillar, USUALLY less vertical rear door, USUALLY more sloping top rear, contoured and deep floor, no real side windows in the cargo area, etc.

But, to me again, the main differences are the D pillar and the side windows (or the lack of).

YMMV though and some models can cross the line in every "class".

Edited for more clearness, thanks to garandman
