Because by our fucked up CAFE standards the CX5 is a 'truck'.

What do you mean??

That should be an advantage though... The Subaru Outback and Forester are rated as 'light trucks' to get around the CAFE requirements.

The 6 wagon would hurt Mazda's fleet average for cars while the CX5 helps their fleet standard for trucks. So they sell the crossover here. The silliness of these crossovers being classed as trucks for CAFE standards means we get lots of midsize crossovers and very few midsize sedan-based wagons. So I agree, we won't get the 6 wagon.

I don't want to bump this to CSM so just read this link.

Not to be pedantic, but that's the 6 (your point is correct, though). The 5 is actually a mini-minivan that would be more useful for a lot of families than their current choices:

Gotcha...

I had it backwards when I first read it...

Yes.. classing these as trucks is silly... just the same as minivans being classed as light trucks too...

This topic has made me crazy since I was a kid... I think everyone knows what a truck is and a CX-5 sure isn't one...

I remember doing a paper on CAFE standards when I was in 8th or 9th grade... I would have never thought it would have taken this long to start upping the standard...

And just to make sure this doesn't devolve into CSM drivel... here is a picture to remind us all what this thread is about...

Here is the car I should bring home for the Mrs. at some point....

These freakin things are rare as hens teeth. E55's, E63 NA's, and E63 turbos. Hard to find any of them on the used market.

My friend has the E63 AMG biturbo wagon. The bark on the 1-2 shift is so sweet.

Here's my old wagon, not quite the same as the benz.

Maybe as time goes on what a "truck" is has changed some.
Today's young generation sees things differently than we do.

'Bark' is the right word...

One of my neighbors has, if I recall the model correctly, a SL65 AMG (12 cyl turbo)... it is very polite sounding until the pedal is put down at which time it becomes surprisingly loud... I was actually shocked how loud it was...

Wow....imagine that

You could even get "caliper brakes stopping you in 1/2 the distance of conventional brakes" NO WAYYYY......gotta have it!

I was born in '56. How'd we ever survive the lack of seat belts, air bags and yes, conventional brakes much less get along withOUT pc's, printed circuits and digital technology? Those were the days.............
