Ride

Bpg, see you when you get back, Pieeye and anyone else, I'd love to hit the dirt. Going to put the new rubber on tomorrow.
Maybe Sunday. Or next week as well. Schedule should be light. We are trying to get to CAW maybe...

Just found this thread & subscribed. I grew up in Charlotte and still visit often. I live near Boone now which is a biking paradise. I'll read through this thread to see where you guys have been riding. Maybe I'll get a chance to hook up with you guys sometime, down there or up here.

Sounds good. Just let me know when you're heading this way.

Btw, I actually road the little XT225 back & fourth from Boone to Cornelius twice this past summer. It was fine on the State highways, but was a little crazy on I-77. I rode Hwy 115 to Wilkesboro, then 421 to Boone. One time I decided to go down Hwy16 from Wilkesboro to Denver, which took longer, but is pretty going through Alexander Co.

Will you be riding or trailering the bike(s) up? I'll buy the beer if you ride up on the XT225!

Clt to Boone

Ride to boone! I think riding the back roads up to your area would be great. 77 is a little dicey for sure... Not good for the nerves! I'm taking my 50/50 tires off and mounting some true knobbies. I'm curious how they will be on the street.

wesdawg,

I had to try a pair of knobbies too. I mounted a pair of Dunlop 606's on my Suzuki DRZ400S, because I wasn't able to ride up a steep-ish section in my "yard" (woods close to my home), after a few days of rain. Wet leaves & muddy ground are slippery. The knobbies did help with that "one spot", but not with any of the rest of the general riding I do, which is 95% gravel and paved mountain roads. The other 5% is logging trails & an unfinished development (neighborhood).

The knobbies have been on for about a year and it's about time to replace the rear. I'll be mounting 50/50 dual sport tires this time because they work much better on the Highway, so I can travel a lot farther from home on them. The reason I road the XT225 to Charlotte was because it was wearing 50/50 tires and the 400 had knobbies. I tried the 400 with knobbies a couple of short test runs down I-77 (Cornelius to Harris Blvd) and that felt "too far". I don't know if it was just the tires, or the stock gearing is too low for 70-75mph. The XT225 with the IRC GP-1's was much, much better. The IRC's have been great going anywhere else I've ridden.

Another negative thing about the 606's is that they are much heavier & much stiffer. The extra weight was very apparent on the 400. They slowed the bike down a lot, especially the acceleration. The stiffness makes them a nightmare to mount compared to the much softer sidewalls on the 50/50 tires. I don't think I could manage fixing a flat on the trail or road with them, but could with the 50/50's if I had to.

I know "you just have to try knobbies" for yourself, because I did too. But I'm done with them and won't be getting them again, unless I get a second set of wheels....and that's not in my plans any time soon.
