If that was your house, then you'd have NO excuses not to ride with us. You'd be basically homeless, your wife would surely leave you if you lived there, wouldn't need a damned JOB to pay for that can, you'd live close to us here,
AND you'd be dyin' to get out of it and RIDE!

What-r-ya-doin tomorrow?

What is ANYONE doing tomorrow?
I WANNA RIDE!!

I have to play weekdays day-by-day. I truly SHOULD be working everyday M-F, but.......
All I really wanna do is RIDE!!

So PM me when you see an opening, no promises, but some days I can blow off on short notice. My boss (me; self employed) is definitely a true FF a$$hole, BUT, that said, he does seem to understand my deep, dark, true passion and the absolute NEED to ride to keep sanity intact!

We'll (4-6 of us?) spend the night somewhere up there, and ride Sunday too around Badger. At least one ADVer will only ride Saturday to Wamic & then ride back to his family camping in Detroit.

Or could we meet somewhere in Rhoddydenderon. I need to be back by noon but can do early morning if you can make it. Lolo pass has some great short gravel too.

Forgive me my brothers, for I have sinned....

I've been canceling rides with my best friend for over a month now. Really busy at work. There's also a cute distraction which entered my life. So I wanted to really share some bro time with Lou. I didn't mention it to anybody. Just me and my bud.

He calls up and says McGubbin's Gulch on Sunday. I didn't feel like riding there and said let's go to the Gifford. Meander over to the Blue Lake trails from the 23/90 intersection. Too far for him so we settle on Jordan Creek and Diamond Mill in the Tillmook. We are so glad we made that decision! It took us all day to do 48miles. Oh yeah!!

So I wake up Sunday and spoon on my MT43 Dot trials tire, bolt up a new 14/48 sprocket set, and link up a new chain. We finally are off at 10 am. Oh well. We roll the van up to the Jordan Creek staging area and it's just the perfect day for riding.

P1090038
Lou's husky getting anxious

We start off from the staging area by warming up on a nice green dot. We really start to stretch our legs on the long blue squares heading east (trais 37 & 84.)

P1090041
Lou popping out of 84

So Lou is showing some seriously bad form climbing a slightly challenging hill.

P1090046
Bad rider

So I decide to show him some techniques for climbing. Of course i must demonstrate this a few times. He finally gets it!

P1090066
Lou with proper technique on 28

We ride over to the waterfall on 28. WOW!!! Here's Lou, a 6 footer, standing there to give you some perspective.

P1090074
"Hugo, how bout you go first?"

So we climb up the waterfall; up, around, what's the difference? We ride over to what we think is intermediate trail 31. We find out it is called PAYNE! It was a challenging descent on a single track twice the width of your tire. I have NEVER experienced 1st gear on my bike to be too high. I was feathering the clutch even with my 14/48 gearing! But it was beautiful!

P1090075
Lou negotiating an easy switchback.

While there were no big roots, rocks, or drops, the low speed maneuvering was a true challenge. I was seriously considering the hundreds of $$ of a steering damper as a reasonable cost! I cannot emphasize how surreal this trail was.

P1090085
Beauty is deceiving as this trail is much more difficult than it looks.

We ride down smith road and pop onto hwy 6 for the mile or so down to the Diamond Mill turn off. This is where the plate is a necessity! We get a little lost in Diamond Mill but start to to find the really fun, steep, exposed, and vista full open trails this place has to offer.

P1090093
Lou and flowers

We take 93 to 121 to the divine trail 76. It was beautiful side slope single-track with some challenges, vistas, and exposure to keep it interesting. We finally decide to head back and give 63 a shot as it parallels the road back to HWY 6. Lou makes it about 1/2 way up and is forced to come back down.

P1090106
About as steep as it looks

I give it a go and make up 4/5ths of the way up. Here is where the new trials tire really shines. I'd gas it, and the tire would spin on the loose rocks in the chute. As soon as it found hard packed dirt, I'd launch the front! That thing just sticks to anything that is not loose! I finally make it up. Right when I am about to ride Lou's husky up, he tries the paddle technique and makes it to the top.

P1090116
Lou trying out the propulsion technique

The next section of 63 is even steeper and looser so we decide to take the fireroad back to 6. The adventure wasn't over yet though. We get back to Jordan Creek road and decide to take 36 up the mountain. Water bar after water bar allowed us to loft the front and occasionally take flight. Man that was fun.

What we didn't know was that 37 was closed due to logging. This meant a really long back track or loop around. We were not deterred and used dead reckoning to try to find the most direct way back to camp.

After following a logging road down hill, we found the vestige of trail 37. A long, super steep, loose, and rocky bastard of a trail which got the better of us a few times. I almost face planted into a watermelon sized boulder hidden beneath the reeds on the side of the trail during one off. The only pictures I took were during our rest almost at the end of the trail.

P1090128
Trials tire at 11psi is amazing!!!

P1090132
Did I mention the weather being PERFECT?

By the end of the day, we were fried. This pic best describes how we felt; on the edge!

P1090130
Kickstand on the edge.

We loaded the van back up, and drove in to town for some Typhoon action. Next time I promise I'll think about my buddies and give you all a heads up.

I hope you all enjoyed!

_Hugo

I plan to be at the Historic Clackamas Lake Ranger Station on FS 42 (Skyline Rd) as close to 9am as I can. I'll pull out the JetBoil & make coffee, and relax.

I don't expect the Salem crew to show there until sometime between 9:30 and 10:30, according to BrandonR. I'll be just-a-waitin' for them at this point. See the Salem/Keizer etc. thread for details.

We'll gas up at CJ's Chevron near Blue Box Pass on Hwy 26, and head out on Barlow Rd. where it leaves Hwy 35, just North of the 26/35 intersection. There are several "outs" along the way, if you wanna skip out early. You won't make it to Wamic and back by noon. But you'll be having too much fun by then, and you'll want to keep taking that "drug" all day.
