At the school where I teach, all of the 8th grade science teachers hold an annual Pinewood Derby contest as a project for our students. I made this as my entry into the teacher's division. The "Cal" script mask didn't come out quite as clean as I had hoped, but I did draw the flames by hand and all painting was done by rattle can. I topped out the weight by melting lead shot into a cavity in the bottom of the car and employed some other speed tricks such as polishing the axles and wheel bores. The cool part is, my car won the teacher's division against a more experienced field!

Go Pinewood Derby! Go Cal!

There's enough 8th grade Science teachers to have a Teachers Division? There's hope!

We are a large middle school and currently have six 8th grade science teachers. Our campus serves almost 2,300 students from the 6th-8th grades.

Go Bears!!!

CO2 was cool, but ether cartridges, same size as the CO2, were a lot more fun. They are faster and the flame shooting out of the back ads a nice touch!

I made this pin vise from a piece of curly hickory, a brass pipe nipple, and a Jacobs size 0 chuck. The Jacobs 0 chuck only holds up to 1/8", and a couple of times I've wanted to hold bits a little larger, so I'm going to make another using the Jacobs 1B chuck in the picture. The 1B will hold up to 1/4", so that will be a nice pair of pin vises I think. I have more of that hickory for the handle.

One of the Dads in our Pack made an outlaw car powered by one of those estes rocket motors. Farking Outta Control FAST. While the other outlaw cars were still on the downhill run, his car was at the finish line.

Tiny D finished Cub Scouts before I had a chance to build a rocket car.

Got the chance to do that in "technology" class in junior high. Changed my life, turned me into a gearhead.

every year thru jr high and hs i managed to con the shop teach into letting me build a handfull of cars atleast 5 every year and id always challenge the teach to an ultimate as its useualy the teach that held the records lol...if i won id get to run an "out of spec" outlaw car.(screw weight/length and such but same cartrage).and id blow there minds....crazy cars that useualy disintegrated at the end of the track..i think ive probably got a few knife edge ones around in an old box

one year i had a car that was litteraly a bullet shaped section around the cartridge with a 1/4 inch triangle running to the front axle which was a wedge ..there wasnt enuf left to even make a note from and the heavily modified wheels even didnt survive the finish

That's awesome!

There are a few requirements you may want to know about... The first being an extremely HIGH tolerance for idiocy. You will be surrounded by it. I have had the extreme good fortune to work with a gaggle of awesome people. Politicians, however, like to mess with everything, ESPECIALLY things they know absolutely nothing about. Case in point: Our state superintendent of schools has never taught anything in his life. Period. You will occasionally... well, maybe often, like once a day, wait.. about every 5 minutes have to deal with "the end of the world" or something along those lines. You also have to be borderline insane and willing to work for peanuts. I'm not kidding about the peanuts. There may be an occasional turkey or ham thrown it to though, so it balances out.

It DOES have some benefits- you work about 30-40 days less a year than anyone else, which is *almost* enough time to get your sanity back. In my case, I've also got year-round access to a pretty wicked metal shop. Plus, a large part of my "working" is building things and showing kids how to build things, and theres a lot to be said for what it feels like when a kid finally "gets it". Engines is by far my favourite class to teach, but this semester my Tech 2 class is really havin a lot of fun. We're building rubber band powered airplanes right now.
