Current project... Trying to figure it out in a way that my 8th graders can copy without to much fuss (or help from me...). The class it's for is called "Engines and Metals 2".

and the current status:

It's an air engine- works like a steam engine but you just hook it up to compressed air. Plan on several changes to the ones my students will make... But I *think* I can get this one to work. My goal is to have a working engine made WITHOUT machine tools, other than a drill press and a welder. Everything else has to be hand tools I have in the shop, so it's going to have to be able to run without much by way of tight tolerances...

Designed a flag mount for the Tiger to use on Patriot Guard Rider missions.

And printed it out on a Stratasys 3D printer in black ABS plastic.

Where to start... Cnc out of a solid block. Or machine seperatley, heat the cube, freeze the ball, insert. Or, make ball. Build cube around the ball. Or...

Oh, seems like the easiest is to machine it with the final release cuts at the end.

A 3D printer would have whipped that right out.

I made a collet to hold them in a 3 jaw set true chuck to eliminate having to indicate each face, it worked pretty well as it held the cubes within .001 on each position change.

Making a collet for that project is smart, would save you a lot of time.

I've been working on a two-cage turner's cube right for a while, but it gets too little attention while I handle all the paying work. Someday, if it all comes together, I'll have something to show here.

We printed a model of six nested spheres.

We've made all sort of models of multiple parts that are built assembled, an example being an automotive dash vent. That's why I sometimes joke that 3D printers help engineers "Design even more stuff that can't be made!"
