I bought my GS that way...Flew to Reno after talking to the seller who assured me that he had the clean title in hand. When I got to his house-surprise! Seems he hadn't bothered to change the title into his name when he bought it from the original owner 6 months ago. Luckily for me it was on a weekday and I was able to call the DMV and make sure that was not a problem which it is not in Oregon.

Yup. Imagine what would have happened if you'd gone down there on a weekend. I once drove to buy a 91 KLR and the guy pulled out a salvage title. Claimed he'd never noticed it said salvage till then and when he submitted the old title, it wasn't salvage. Turned out OR DMV screwed up and he was correct (he said he'd hold it pending DMV microfiche search but sold it to someone else who apparently didn't care about the salvage title) but who doesn't notice that your new title has SALVAGE written across the top.

•$25 on the 16th day.
•$2 per day for each day after the 16th day, up to a maximum of $100.

As to having the seller sell you a vehicle by signing the title with no date and not filling in the buyer, this requires a sympathetic and trusting seller because they are on the hook until a report of sale is filed...

Why file a report of sale?
The report of sale does NOT transfer ownership, but will release you from legal liability if you file the report properly. If you don’t file a report of sale, you may be held liable for parking tickets, impound fees, and other financial liabilities incurred by the new owner until they transfer the title into their name.

Personally, I'd never consider selling a vehicle without fully filling out the title with a buyer and immediately filing a report of sale. Likewise, I wouldn't buy a vehicle from someone with a BOS and a different name on the title from the seller. And I'd be nervous walking into a DMV with a title in one name and a BOS from another.

I've heard some say you can use the "2nd reassignment" part of the title to handle a flip, but this is for dealers only, so you'd need to launder the paperwork through a dealer.

All in all, it's certainly possible to flip a bike and not have it run through your ownership (thus avoiding the huge sales tax hit), but it is not as simple as you say unless you are a registered dealer.

Kind of a myth. I was self employed, and WA's business income tax ate me alive.

So WTF already with the death graphics? Also, you may not be able to afford an $80 electric pressure washer from Wal-Mart but I bet if you spent less money on graphics and spend a whole $10 down at the coin-op car wash your bike would SELL!!!!!
