Couple a hundred acres just went up in smoke down in southern Johnson County. That got hairy for a bit.

It came about 10 feet from our neighbors house.

Pictures to follow.

I know Sat. is a long way out for this group but is anyone planning a ride yet?

Our youth group is doing a Sonic Fund Raiser all day in Granbury and I'll be there from about 12 to 5 but I'd be up for some riding in the morning as long as I can make my shift.

Of course a gaggle of dual sports descending on the place for drinks would be cool too.

Some iPhone pics of the devastation for your perusal. These are all from riding around the neighbor's place and checking things out to make sure nothing was going to try and back burn or flare up again.

I don't think you can see it but that post near the corner was still burning when the picture was taken. Shortly thereafter a water truck came along and doused it again.

The guys with mules were impressed with the GSA after watching it pick it's way through some rocky down hills.

It got up in these woods and the VFD's just had to watch it burn on through so they could stop it on the other side. I wish I would have had the DSLR to play with for this picture.

A huge thanks goes out from me and my family to those guys who volunteer to do this stuff. All this really has me thinking about signing up to help out.

Do they know what started the fire??? If Texas keeps burning off and we don't get any rain, it's going to look like an Arizona Desert.

Some electrician on a neighboring place was rewiring a pump house and crossed a couple wires. The arc hit some tall dead grass and it was gone.

On that note, anybody seen any deer recently? Beginning to wonder if there hasn't been a widespread die-off over the last few weeks. I'm not seeing deer anywhere around Austin these days.

They're still doing pretty good in this area but we're literally in the Brazos river valley.

&..............

As if the wildfires aren't enough to deal with......Now we've got "Duelling Earthquakes".....one kinda close in southern CO....& the one on the east coast....both within 24 hrs of each other. Hope no one's kin is involved. I have a nephew in NY City but they weren't that close to VA & DC.

Saw a lot sleeping on the side of the road on the way to Junction on Saturday. Some pretty fresh. One actually alive and walking around. The live one was about 10:30am. Saw a dead one in the little town of London up against a fence in someone's front yard. Basically right in town.

Lots of deer and hogs around here. I saw 4 hogs ran over by Hog Creek on FM 2602. Dodged a doe and her fawn on FM 1991 this morning. They are having to move to forage and find water.

Like we talked about Veriest, all can help in thier own way. I have guys on my dept that are not in very good shape but we get the job done. I have been disappointed in some of our new recruits. One of them that went with me to Texas A & M fire school this summer wound up in the infirmary 3 times. He really pusses out Sadly he just got out of the Army in March and I truly wonder what kind of soldier he was. He acts tough until things get hot and then he runs. As a trainer I went through 3 evolutions for his one in the live fire box. I was in long enough to figure out that the sweat on my knees was actually blistered skin Right now, there is no relief in sight. Fires are going to continue to be a danger until all the fuel sources are gone

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
