Another great time in Big Bend. 2nd year at this event. KLR did much better on dirt than the Harley did last year although I seem to biff on the cheaper bike more.
![]() Rode horses in the hills around Study Butte. So steep another rider dismounted and walked his horse. ![]() Great entertainment at last night's banquet. ![]() Thanks go to Richard, Connie, Roger, Terlingua and all the participants for a great time. Sign me up for next year!!

Nothing spectacular, Pizza. Just generally waiting for me when I stopped, fumbled, loitered, rested, hydrated, ate Dody's energy bars, or mentally mapped a doable line. He did have to give me a push when I dug myself a hole on a loose gravel uphill on River Road West. In fact, no single thing on River Road was that tough for me. Certainly not undoable. It was just relentless. It just kept throwing crap at you. Over and over and over. After a while this particular old guy just tires out. I knew better than to keep pushing on so I stopped. A lot.
I think that is why the videos don't seem that bad. We're looking for that single dramatic section and it ain't there. The talc pit everybody talks about within a mile from the start? James and I blew through it fresh (well, he blew through it, I made it through it with style point deductions) and he stopped and said "Could that have been it?" It was no giant thing.

Sounds like y'all didn't have any traffic problem on 170 which is good. I think that was the thing for me,
no one particular section but, was fun for a long long time. Was that you on the front row watching the hula-hoop dancer ??

I wasn't talking about that paved River Road. I was talking about that nasty dirt River Road in the park. 170 was the same as always. Scared the shit out of me early with those completely blind turns right after the uphills , so I decided to sightsee except when it was flat. (Edit: I guess a more accurate and honest description would be that I would haul ass until I reached the top of the hill, pee on myself when I realized I had no idea which way the road was going, throw on the binders approaching the peak, then haul ass down the hill. Not my best effort. Could not get a rythym going for shit. I remember rding it better but that could just be failing memory.)
Traffic wasn't bad on 170. Passing was easy. Now sport-biking the north side on the Observatory loop was a ball. James and I were both feeling good and ripped that sunofabitch up. WooHoo!!

Oh, I was waaay too smart to take the medium pig. I went whole enchilada. The Big Ugly does the whole River Road. Surprised more than a few fellers that I was out there on something that big, especially without a knobby on the drive wheel.
