It was probably one of these "Hold My Beer and Watch This" moments. After the alcohol wore off, they woke up in the middle of Siberia, in a borrowed car with no fuel left. I can see how this happened...

Their buddies were still celebrating at the orignal tavern...

you've made my xmas break that much more interesting.

i did enjoy the story about the norwegians and the sidebar about the germans who refused to help. it's true what you say about the people being ever-willing to help. were it me, i'd have pointed to the germans and said, in my best Sgt. Schultz voice, "Steigen Sie aus!"

Just an addendum ...

The guy in the middle of this foto from the first page of this thread, is the head of the Yakutsk 4WD club ... his name is Rayil, and he knows and is involved with anything and everything to do with the Road of Bones.

We met him through mutual contacts in Yakutsk ... he was the guy who escorted the Long Way Round guys on the Road of Bones (2004) and organised and hired a series of Ural backup trucks to accompany that trip all the way to Magadan ... so that trucks would conveniently be "on hand" when needed.

This past summer he organised a Hungarian expedition on the Road of Bones ... the Hungarians took a convertible Cadillac Eldorado to Magadan and obviously needed Ural trucks for the river crossings.
