Greetings Stuart, debating premix ratios are sort of like engaging in religious or political discussions.

Your current mix is approx. a 30:1 ratio and that is a reasonable ratio to run. I personally would not go to a higher ratio (less oil per unit of fuel) than that for a performance 2T motor.

Most performance 2T motors will do just fine on a 20:1 to 30:1 premix ratio, with a good synth, properly jetted.

Keep in mind that all other things equal, as a general rule the more oil you premix (that is, the more oil you mix with a given volume of fuel), the leaner your air/fuel mixture will go on a relative basis.

Just as important, what specific oil are you using?

I've been using the Motul 800 Off-Road version since my engine was rebuilt. I premix since it's not an oil-injector engine.

No soft or hard seizures in the engine at all. I'm running roughly 2.5% to 3% range. I can tell when I'm closer to the (recommended) 2% mix because the engine note sounds edgier and flatter.

My only issue is that the oil costs about $15.00 a quart. But it's cheaper than a rebuild.

not shaw what you mean by rated as? if you google it you will find it ,all i know is that a lot of off roader use it and they seem not to have any problems with it.
I have done a bit more research and have been advised to use 35-40ml per ltr of fuel. Got to look after this engine doing over 3000miles june july time in 7 days and in jan/feb doing 500+ in 2 days.
The whole scooter is geared up for long distance touring (or will bewith in the next week or 2!)

I was referencing the API or JASO certification. Perhaps you could google it also, eh?

That is good stuff. It will be fine. When it comes to 2T's it is best to use a good full synthetic oil.

Go ahead and put bottom-feeder oil in your scooters if you want.

I'm going to have a LOT less carbon buildup and other contaminants on my piston and in my cylinder.

Motul 800 has worked perfectly for me so far and I am loath to change to anything else - let alone trolling motor oil sold by Wal-Mart.

Just trying to ride through the parking lot without getting clobbered by a mouth-breather is a mini-adventure...

That is simply incredible.

What racers do you know that run such absurd ratios?

50:1 is 2%. Which is what I am supposed to be using since break-in.

So that ratio doesn't seem too far out.

You can run whatever ratio you want, it's your motor, however as a general rule you're not going to get max power at that ratio, presuming you run pre-mix only. A 50:1 mix with a decent 2T oil is probably going to be just fine if you don't routinely stress the motor.

My comment to the other poster about what I consider as an "absurd" 100:1 ratio was in the context of racing small-bore 2T aircooled motors & max power generation. I personally wouldn't intentionally run that ratio in a weed wacker. That said, YMMV (your mixture may vary).
