Eek Times are changing...

Life sucks, and then it sucks even more.
A diagnosis of Lupus followed by a confirmed diagnosis
of renal cell carcinoma. That was the summer of
2006. Consultations with numerous specialists
resulted in 8 hour surgery in mid-November.
Removed left kidney, spleen and
all the lymph nodes in my chest cavity and most other places.
The Renal Cell Carcinoma had metatized to Non-Hodgkins
Lymphoma.

It's now 2011, my beloved Goldwing was sold along
with the sidecar. Continuing chemo due
to complications has sucked my desire
to even ride let, alone function.

I no longer ride alone; in fact not at all.
however my physical size remains

hence wish to change from 1-up

to tallnbig68

...maybe one of these days I'll be back on the road.
Many hoops to jump through first.

Hey Baldy,

Was hoping I could change my name to "RollCage" or "Roll Cage". Reason for it, is after some weird medical stuff I went through recently, I was given that as a nickname, and it stuck. See the story below if interested or skip to the bottom for the results.

************************************************** ********************************

Story:

So Spring of 2010 I start waking up every morning with severe chest pain. Didn't feel right, but would go away after about 30 minutes, so I concluded that it wasn't a big deal. Well, less than a week later I start getting this severe pain at all times of the day. It literally felt like my rib cage was trying to separate into a million pieces. I go see my school nurse (We got a local health center on campus here at New Mexico Tech) and she says that it's "Costochondritis", the inflammation of the tissue and cartilage surrounding the rib cage, and sticks me on a shit ton of Ibuprofen. Tells me that if it isn't better in a week, com see her.

1 week goes by, nothing changes.

I go see her again, and she says that it could be some broken ribs. I need x-rays now. So now waiting for x-rays, I can no longer ride, rock climb, or work out in general. Until I can get the x-rays, nurse puts me on vicodin 24 hours a day.

At this point I decide to switch to my main Doc in Albuquerque. Now even with the big gun painkillers I am still in excruciating pain all day. Very hard to sleep. Hard time focusing in class. Life pretty much sucks.

When my Doc sees me he's inclined to think it might be a hairline fracture of the rib cage, but wasn't convinced. We get the x-rays. Results show no broken bones. My Doc says he'll get back to me, and runs all of my blood work.

About a month has gone by now.

Doc calls me in the middle of class to tell me that due to my family history--Males in my family are prone to weird clotting issues--that he doesn't want me to do anything stressful. Thinks I may have one or more blood clots, and if I stress myself they could break off and kill me. Now I'm confronting death as serious possibility. Moral takes a serious down turn. Doc says next step is to get CAT scans of my chest and torso.

2 more weeks go by.

Get the CAT scans. Doc says he'll look at them as soon as they come in.

Couple of days pass, and I get a phone call. No blood clots, thank god, but nothing else either. Only interesting thing they found was that surrounding my rib cage is a matrix of cartilage that normal people don't have. Apparently the type of cartilage that supports the floating ribs also exists for me surrounding the majority of my ribs in my chest (Talk about chest protector). Anyway, Doc says he's never seen this before, Radiologist says he's heard of it, but never seen it and says it's extremely rare. I think this is pretty cool, but I'm still in pain, and this doesn't explain much. I'm told that it has absolutely no detrimental health effects.

Back to square one.

So now a little more than two months has gone by, and nothing has changed health wise. Mentally I've now confronted death, and have a different perspective on life. Physically I now know that I can probably take a baseball to the chest and be okay.

After telling my best friend down here about said medical developments he says: "Wow Dude. You're like a mutant or something. Like an X-Men or some shit. I'm gonna call you RollCage! That'll be your mutant name!"

And so that's where the name came from. Friends down here start calling me that, and so it spreads.

Meanwhile, still in pain, but now with an awesome nickname.

School year ends, go to my sisters graduation in Providence RI, still in massive pain. Oddly, I have much better perspective on life after dealing with all of this.

Get home, and go to a friends birthday party on a random weekend. I see her parents whom have been good friends of mine for at least 8 years. I tell my friend's Mom, Cheryll, about all of this and she says to me: "You know, one of my old friends is a nurse, and she had a patient that had something similar. Turned out to be a weird form of acid reflux. Maybe you should try acid reducers." I was at the point where I thought anything might help, so I decided to give it a go. Buy some acid reducers at Costco, pop one before going to bed, and then sleep. Wake up the next morning, not really thinking about anything when I realize that it was kinda late... Like 11 am or something... Must have slept in... Wait a sec... I haven't slept in for 3 months... Couldn't... Too much pain to sleep... Wait... No pain... WTF?

So the acid reducers worked. Hot damn! No more Vicodin! No more pain! WOOHOO!!!

So it was acid reflux somehow. I told my doc about it, and he was stumped. He'd never seen acid reflux present this way. Ever. Usually acid reflux is associated with indigestion or something of that like. Nothing like that for me. Just bull shit amounts of pain. I actually don't blame him for anything. I just have a weird ass body apparently.

I put the pain down to too much stress caused by a bitch of an ex girlfriend who made me feel like a piece of shit, and too heavy of a workload at school. Stress can do some terrible things.

************************************************** ************************************************** ***

And so long story short: acid reflux sucks, heavy painkillers suck, stress sucks, and I have seriously wicked ribcage.

Now my nickname is RollCage and like I said, I would be stoked if you could change my username to that. Thanks for listening.

~ Alex

Dear sir or madame. Please change my name from (what was supposed to have been) VekDeDuck to V-Duck. It's simpler that way...

Cheers!
